How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

The young Marine was out of line with the question especially if the officer was in uniform, but I have my doubts he was. The officer handled the situation badly by having a shouting match with the Marine. the Sgt-Maj did the right thing. As to the extra duty the young Marine will be lucky to escape a court martial.

Being the story doesn't specify if the Marine with his mother was in civilian attire and wearing a hat indoors, or he was in uniform wearing a cover, sounds like thing got blown way out of proportion. Most MCCS facilities like the MC Exchange have a dress code. There are also regulations prohibiting one from wearing a hat indoors in base. If true, it could have been handled better. A few years back in Jacksonville, NC, they got a bit zealous with this with a directive being published prohibiting the wearing of hats indoors on or off base. We had a few incidents of over zealous Staff NCO's going to Country Bars where most of the patrons Military and Civilian would wear Western Wear including Cowboy Hats and Ball Caps. These over zealous Staff NCO's would intrude upon patrons, demand to see Military ID and attempt to enforce the No Hat Indoor Policy off base. More often than not, these zealots would be exported out of the establishment by Security and be barred from returning. As a Navy Retiree, (I have a beard mind you) I have heard the words "Hey Marine" directed at me by one of these self proclaimed enforcers. Since I'm a Sailor and don't answer to "Hey Marine" I generally ignore these people, just as I did while on active duty. In Yuma, when I was anot HM1, I had a young sergeant who obviously did not know Navy Rank pull the same stunt on me. I had just come in from the field on an admin run to the base and he was going nuts over my wearing a Boonie Cover (Command Authorized) and my sleeves down. He persisted after I identified myself as a First Class Petty Officer. Let's just say he got an education that day.

I would have done the same thing that and added fucking phone watch to the equation for like a month. nothing pissed marines off more than for their personal time to be taken away

Regardless of how the officer initiated the situation, the Marine should not have responded in the manner that he did. If this played out the way it did, I have to wonder where Marine Training is going. During my time in, no properly trained Marine of entry level rank to at least Gunny would never have said that to an officer's face. I can see a Sergeant Major saying that to a boot lieuy, but not in public.

The SgtMaj did nothing wrong in my opinion, as for the mother, WOW!!! He might be your son ma'am, but he belongs to the Corps.

The enlisted marine was in the wrong. Marines do not wear covers indoors, bottom line.

The JO, from what I read, was initially correct in how he began handling the situation. The younger Marine was out of line. Never wear a cover inside. Usually, however, to avoid a scene, situations like that are recorded and then handled at a later date, at least when I was in SSgt Wiznoski handled it like that.
