How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

This is a great learning point. I have not been in the corps but as a senior NCO with 31 years of service, I have seen my share of this scenario. It sounds like this took place on a training post. Either way. Both the officer and the marine were out of line. An old line from my sergeants major "praise in public correct in private". This does not say whether the officer was in uniform or ID'd themselves. Now for the sergeants major (or the proper name for the E9 in the marines). The only issue I see is putting his hands on a soldier (marine) with out lawful justification. Now before I'm crushed with negative remarks, this is based off facts presented by the Col. First action, deescalate the situation. Move it out of the public eye. The E9 will need to assess the situation and make corrective action and notifications if necessary. We sr nco's are the professionals we are to lead by example.

The young Marine was in the wrong all the way, if the officer identified himself this Marine should be charged with insubordination, evidently has mommy issues if he has his mommy running with him on a Marine base. The officer maybe should have not entered into screaming match, but the total lack of respect from the junior Marine, I can't blame him.
In respect to the Sergeant Major, he is completely good with me snatching that young man up and removing him from the PX so as not to allow him to embarrass the Marine Corps anymore than he already has.

I can see this happening back in the 90's when I was active... nowadays not so much

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
SSgt Kahlil Guinn Unfortunately it is still happening in one form or another! I retired in 2012 and there were still incidents like this happening and others unfortunately. You will have a few bad apples in the service branches and that is why we have the necessary regulations (UCMJ and Chapters) to get rid of the bad apples!

Both are wrong. The young Marine for talking to an officer in that way and wearing the cover in the building. The officer's way of handling and escalating the situation. The young Marine showed insubordination to a Marine officer and needs to delt with. The mother of the young Marine should have stayed out of military situation like this.

Sounds like that young enlisted needed his rear dusted. Weather a LT or even a higher ranking NCO, once identified, any thing less than a yes Sir or yes Sgt needed correcting on the spot, period. There is no PC for disrespect.

The young marine was out of uniform regarding the cover, upon correction he cursed out an officer, the sgtmgr handled it properly and this young pup will likely end up in front of his company commander if not his battalion commander and likely both and why was his mommy with him ????

If he was getting ready to leave then o can understand putting the cover on. If you have to carry things and your arms are full then you put your cover on indoors and proceed outside. The other issue is the butterbar. If your going to tell someone something identify yourself. How is it to say I'm a junior officer and I see your new, I want to save you from getting in trouble no cover in doors. The young marine and the officer should both be disciplined for unprofessionalism because at the very least the junior officer should not start getting into a pissing match.
