How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

I know back in the day if I had mouthed off to an officer with my mother present the biggest problem would have been my mother as she would have knocked me on my A$$ for talking like that. I grew up in a military family and needless to say even before any of us enlisted we already knew some of what to do and more importantly NOT to do.
The SGM did the right thing by intervening and de-escalating the situation quickly.
In regards to questions of the veracity of this topic, while there may be some bit of embellishment here and there, I honestly would not be surprised if it was in fact truthful given the fact the way I see kids coming up nowadays with little if any respect for authority. I attribute that to a combination of now living in an "enlightened society" were the old ways of correcting our young can be easily construed as criminal and thus many parents are flat out frustrated with their hands being tied and then at the other end of the spectrum too many parents who never should have had kids in the first place. Where I live I see an awful lot of kids out of control due to the negligence/ignorance on the part of the parents and thus it makes for almost weekly phone calls from me to CPS but before I prattle on I will leave that for another time.

I just got out of the Young Marine Unit based on Camp Pendleton as the Unit 1stSgt and I would personally be appalled if this story is true and if it was one of my Young Marines. You never wear a cover indoors and above all else you never disrespect your superiors especially not US Marines or any other service member. (Please note there are four units on Camp Pendlton :Camp Pendleton, Eagle, Southeast County, and Saddleback. I belonged to Camp Pendleton Young Marines.)

MIDN 4/C (Join to see) Hard to say what unit he was from, but I confirmed the incident immediately with my wife's employees and the store employee at the cash register before posting this incident. I agree with your comments. Thanks for your service at Camp Pendleton. Me and the wife just moved from Oceanside, CA after being there four years. My worked at the MCX for three of those years. Move to Castle Rock, CO. Good luck Patrick!

Extra duty? No there will be a massacre lol. That kid was in the wrong, all the way so was the LT because that's who probably was the officer. He acted like a little kid and got treated like a little kid. Sergeant Major did the right thing as a senior enlisted which is what's needed nowadays.

I also see a tint of the BS factor here in this story. The major problem in the story is that the facts: 1. aren't consistent with even a single branch of service mixing Army and Marines, and 2. assuming that they WERE all Marines, it doesn't fit the Marine Attitude or Marine conduct/proceedures for handling enlisted vs officer situations like this at all. I have never seen anyone "hit the deck" in the MCX or even anywhere on base over an argument. Yes there would be PLENTY of gawkers and rubber-neckers though. I also cant see a top-ranked SNCO behave that way either, storming the scene like a drill instructor in a boot-camp squadbay. Ive personally witnessed it in private, but never in public. As for the question of how it SHOULD have been handled, Id have to say exactly like Sgt Kennedy stated below. Marines have a STRICT protocol in matters like this. ON THE OTHER HAND, I have been to ARMY bases as both a Marine and as a soldier. I have seen instances where the two have mixed with volatile consequences, for example on Fort Sill. There Marines and soldiers are intermingled, all young, dumb, and full of... adrenaline. I have seen Marines go off on soldiers, not realizing the difference in regulations/traditions. I have seen all out platoon battles come within a second of beginning over a soldier walking between a Marine and the platoon he was standing in front of giving instructions to. (I was personally IN that platoon, and that soldier had the fear of GOD in his eyes when the whole platoon of Marines erupted on him before being called off by our instructor.) So my point is this, this story could only make sense to me if it occurred in mixed company. Just my opinion though.

Cpl Julio Reynolds Sorry you feel that way - the facts are the facts and yes it was Marines (hard to believe for me too). I don't usually post something that isn't factual Julio, nor does my wife embellish on her facts either! It is what it was! Thanks for sharing your story about Fort Sill, OK Your point is well taken and there are other spouses that work at the MCX that aren't Marines - my wife is an Army Spouse. I frequesnt the MCX at least two to three times a week and there are Navy and Army personnel there ll the time from the surrounding area.

I don't understand why some individuals don't believe you sir, why would you make this up! There are young marines with I don't care attitudes all the time. I totally believe this story and hope that marine will eventually take pride and respect our tradition

SGT MAJOR should have escorted both outside pulled I'd cards and got unit info. Young Marine would have gotten corrected on the spot and young officer would get a one on one with senior SNCO mentoring. Then follow up with both commands

Capt James Kerins - Let's be succinct shall we? You are basically calling the man a liar for something YOU don't have direct evidence refuting. We all know that cockups happen in all branches and that includes the Marine Corps so knock off the crap. By the way you are acting you make the Marine Corps look bad just in the way you are comporting yourself. An officer, especially a Captain should know better. And seriously? Casting doubt and aspersions just because a person chose another branch over the Marine Corps? That is bad form in ANY branch and speaks ill of the branch.

Capt James Kerins - way out of line Jim and rank has nothing to do with my post to you, it should have something to do with how you address a former Colonel, emotions can be tricky but knee jerk reactions that lead to accusations and insults are wrong no matter the service, trash me if you wish but your totally off the wall with your comment, good on you for trying to stand up for USMC but never at the cost of defaming someone that has honorably served and you know nothing about, plus these Marines all made mistakes and trying to gloss them over doesn't make them go away, your comment doesn't need to be overlooked either because it makes us all look bad

CWO3 (Join to see) - I see your post asking for members to join and sound off. You a member of the US Marine Corps Mustang Association? you are a mustang and you do support the military so just asking you the same you ask others, just like the Col.

Capt James Kerins - lost me, no mention of Mustangs so maybe you have me mixed up with someone else, I wanted to go LDO in Engrs but they did away with most LDOs in 90's about same time they brought the CWO5 rank aboard, don't take my words personal, just trying to keep the peace because there have been a lot of attacks on people here in the past, the Col has done a lot of good for Vets and here on RP and has earned some respect IMO, S/F and keep your powder dry

SPC David S. It's not - my wife actually witnessed the entire incident at the MRX yesterday! You knwo be now David I wouldn't publish something that wasn't true and my wife doesn't usually exaggerate an event like this. When the CSM yelled form the back of the store the entire place went silent and peopl actually hit the deck! What I was looking for out of this post is: How could this have been hnadled by the Junior Officer or CSM differently. How would you have handled it if you were asked to remove your headgear inside the PX/BX?

I guess I was hoping it was BS. I can't imagine a SM going through boot camp and coming out with that kind of attitude. If the SM was in uniform I would have informed him - "Your covers on". If it was a civilian ball cap more than likely wouldn't have said anything. How I go about from there depends on the SM's response. If he removes his cap we're all good if he doesn't I'd get his unit information and inform his NCOIC what's going on. If he doesn't relay the information I pass along his name and rank to higher ups and then clear the kill radious.

How did the wife know he was a lieutenant? The assumption from the story is that he was in uniform, which the young Marine would have recognized. I think this story may have been a Readers Digest Humor in Uniform submission!

CW2 Ernest Krutzsch Well I'm really getting this from everybody today on this post. My wife is very familar with the ranks since she is married to me and she works in the MRX, so forever reason the Private and the "butter ball" got into it and the CSM cleaned up the mess, while MRX Employees tried ask them all to leave, the private, the junior officer and the mother. Real stuff, confirmed! Hopefully, one of my RP Member connections might have been there at the same time and they can confirm the story. Again, I was using this to discuss or make a point about the proper way of using your rank to take corrective action in a public environment.

Sorry miss the MY wife portion, just saw wife, didn't mean to impugn her in any way, I just thought if they were in uniform that the Marines had better discipline than that. The Sergeant Major was justified, and the mother should be escorted off base. I see extra duty and a portion of a paycheck being relinquished. The officer needs some training also.
