How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

This story was not odd, pretty sure something like this could happen. The officer should have corrected the junior marin3 in private....pulled him aside. Then if more corrective action is needed well then put your boot in the boots tail end.

If that boy wants to play Marine then he should learn a little thing about respect and etiquette. You don't join the Young Marines and then disrespect another person, regardless of rank or affiliation.

First:....a firm but discrete "Hey Marine...." Second....Upon observing brightwork on his collar, I would have politely, and most importantly DISCRETELY said "Cover Sir?" in a manner not to attract any attention. Third I would have expected him to be a little bit affronted about being "caught" by an enlisted man, and would have expected a response, though a gentlemanly one. Courtesy, or the lack thereof reaps what it sows.....I used to get a chuckle out of ambushing Army Medical Officers outside the PX at Fort Sam Houston, or outside the hospital. I did it politely, knowing that Sgt. Maj. Caldwell would be getting another phone call....One Captain once informed me that the Army doesn't salute at the PX. My response to him was "Captain(loved calling them by their rank), Marines do not lower our standards based upon the company we keep."

I have seen this same thing in a Naval bar in Pearl Harbor! The young Marine came in ran his mouth about how he would hurt any Sailor well let's just say a Seal didn't like his Rhetoric!!!

When I encountered a soldier/officer out of uniform, I always whispered for him/her to get their uniform in shape. No need to get loud about it.

MSG Andy Cristofaro Excellent! Young soldiers or should I say service members don't like to be called out in public, nor do civilian employees. I like the approach, keeping it on the down low, instead of embarrassing someone in front of their mother or other bystanders. I believe there is a wrong way and a right way to approach these issues and then they don't turn into an embarrassment for others! Well stated Andy and thanks for sticking to the question instead of questioning the Marines inability to ever make a mistake - much appreciated!

When asked "who the f*(k are you?" (and I guess this officer was in civilian clothes) that's when you whip out the DD form 2 and identify yourself.

TSgt Robert Danley Based on what I was told both were in uniform. The Cashier that I spoke to afterwards to confirm said that the Junior Officer was loud and abrupt embarrassing the junir enlisted Marine in front of his mother and he just sanpped back in the wrong fashion! I believe if the Junior officer approached the Marine in a different fashion without involving his mother (who was loud mouth also) the situation would have ended with Marine removing his cover (realizing that he was still indoors), not out the door yet and the whole situation could have been avoided. The Sgt Maj wouldn't have been provoked to get involed and there would have been no shouting match - just my opinion as a former Commander at the Company, Battalion, and Brigade levels!

Harshness has it's place in boot camp and combat, but in garrison one must maintain their military bearing. Tact is a part of military bearing. The young enlisted Marine was in the wrong. The junior officer was wrong to engage in a shouting match. Having been raised a military brat, while I was in if I walked into an exchange as a young private (I started off in the Army) with my mother and I was in uniform and forgot to take off my cover good ole Mom would have reminded me. And then reported same to my Dad later on.

Every Marine in the place would have said something to him about his cover, unless he was under arms, at which time, knowing he was in error, he would have removed his cover; additionally I can't imagine a young enlisted man getting into a screaming match with an Officer (junior or otherwise) in the Exchange. I agree with Sgt Kennedy, this doesn't pass the sniff test.

Given that, if this went down as described, the young Marine will probably get Office Hours and the young Lt will be in front of his CO tomorrow. I applaud the SgtMaj for doing what needed to be done....it's probably why he's a Sergeant Major :-)

I was stationed on Pendleton for 4 yrs as an AGR. I've seen authority exercised by Marines there but not to this extent.

Not saying it did or didn't happen.

MSG (Join to see) Me and my wife were there for four years recently and my wife has seen several different incidents in front of the MCX and this one inside. This happened very quickly at the checkout (the one closest to the Barber shop they set up for Marines in uniform). It involved a young Marine with his Mother in Line almost done checking out, a junior officer behind him, and the Marine putting on his cap before exiting the building. Hot tempered young man saying the F word to the junior officer and a mother making comments (blown out of proportion quickly and the SgtMaj moving it outside. My question to the RP Group is not whether they believed it happened, but how could it have been handled better by all parties concerned. I've seen some serious Marine authority exercised in OIF 05-07 and at Camp Pendleton

Sir,
I'm not sure what to think of the situation. I didn't go to the MCX portion often. Went to Dunkin every day. Lol.

I was on the Del Mar side.

I'm not going to call BS on the story. I've seen things happen, even in the Army side that aren't right.

The young Marine was obviously a trainee that needed a lesson. He got one.

OMG! Assuming it's true...both the junior officer and the young marine should have some extra duty.
