How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

Was the junior officer in uniform for the Marine to identify that fact. Other wise the officer should have approached the young Marine announcing his name and rank, then proceed in telling the Marine about the fact that you don't wear your cover indoors.

SPC Michael Mcevoy Sr. Yes, both in uniform - JO could have approached the individual at the door to remind him. I think he embarrassed the young Marine in front of his mother by being called out in front of her. There was no excuse, but JO could have handled it a different fashion from my perspective. "Hey you just put your cover on before leaving the building. You need to remove it - thanks!" Just some of my thoughts. Getting in his face in front of his mother most likely didn't set well and the young man lost his cool and military bearing! Thanks for you response!

All I know is that if I had done that as a young PFC in the Army my ass would've been grass…

From a Seabee's point of view the young marine has lots of extra duty in his future. The junior officer might get a bit of training on escalating a situation that could have avoided. As far as Old Salty's conduct I think the young marine got off easy.

Damn! Back in the old Corps, we rankers couldn't wait to get under a roof and doff our covers so we would not have to salute (unless "under arms" of course).

When the young Marine smarted off to the junior officer, the junior officer would have been totally within his rights to have decked him.

I said it before and I say again; one of the first things that we were told (the Army boots)in basic was that you do not wear a cover indoors. I don't care who told this marine, even one of his own rank, that he should remove it or how it was said to him. If I remember right from the original question it was a sergeant who said but that is not important. If he was put on the floor and had to do a hundred pushups in front of the entire MCX I don't have a problem with it. Disrespectful conduct toward anyone who out ranked him is entirely unacceptable and I'm not interested in anyone's opinion to the contrary because they too are wrong period no question mark. BTW: This is just something my parents told me when I was a child and I wouldn't even consider back talking them even to this day and I'm 63 years old.

One critical point needs clarifying...sorry it if already has, but I can't anything about.

By "young Marine," are we talking about a bona-fide US Marine aged 18 or 19, or are we talking about a teenager who is a member of the Young Marines, a social activity for kids who generally have some interest in being a Marine one day and like to learn about the history, traditions, jargon, etc etc, of the Marine Corps (and who often go on field trips to Marine Corps installations, to the dismay of junior enlisted Marines such as myself way back when, who get stuck chaperoning them or putting on educational exhibits).

I figure it must be the latter. For one thing, I cannot imagine a young and (presumably) very junior enlisted Marine talking to a commissioned officer like that, any more than I can imagine the officer in that scenario doing anything other than Article 15 his ass for insubordination/disrespect so fast as to make his fuzzy little head spin. Anybody he was a real Marine, I can't imagine a Sergeant Major escorting him out of that situation.

No, pretty sure it was a Marine in his young years in the corps. I believe the officer was not in uniform so the Marine questioned his authority no matter how wrong or right the Officer may have been. I have seen a SgtMaj, (awarded the CMH in Vietnam), get at a Lieutenant that had gone after the SgtMaj just outside the MCX for a non salute. The SgtMaj took offense to the Lt deciding to call him out when the Lt had apparently also failed to render to the CMH which was clearly mounted at the top of his Ribbon bar.... Not always cut and dry. When you're not there.

I've witnessed similar idiocy but never in the post PX. Small PX's on training bases like Yakima, NTC and JRTC seem to invite it. The last time I dealt with it I escorted the "soldiers" outside and over to the dumpsterfor a memorable ass chewing - the smell from the dumpster added to my colorful language made the while thing perfect.

Had one very young and very new NCO (CPL) get a snootfull and try to correct a CPT (one of my company commanders) in the clothing sales store. Didn't end well for him as my CSM got to him before the young CPT (who was in the right) went off.

45/45 and half a month for two months was a valuable learning experience for the former NCO. Seems his CSM and my CSM were friends and their CDR took a dinner view of such shenanigans than even I did.

The junior officer should have simply placed the cover-wearing POG into the position of attention, removed said cover, and then asked who his 1SG was.....and, from there, leave it in the capable hands of his unit's leadership.
