I'm going to likely be before a board for an AGR E5 42A position. Does anyone know where I can get study material to prepare for it?

I retired as an AGR 42A4O. When we boarded for replacement we were looking for knowledge of the systems used to process soldier actions. Familiarity with Microsoft products, Formatting memorandums, knowledge of pay problems and resolution methods and two very very important assets; ability to approach things as a member of the team not a loner or pointer and secondly, knew his/her centers of influence of the position (i.e. who would you go to for help for pay, promotion, NCOER's, schools, resources, UCMJ, complaints etc ...knowing the 5-8 main people that would know the answer and get the soldier or family member the answer quickly. Most of the interviewers would care a whole lot less if you didn't know current events, Army Values, or even the units mission. Those things can all be fixed in a matter of days! If you start next week, can you help soldiers with a drive and passion that they are the single most important person in your office if it's a brand new E2 recruit, a Platoon Sergeant, a Lieutenant needing help with his OER support documents, a spouse and child of a soldier needing ID's, a field grade officer wanting help with a promotion packet or the BDE Commander needing data ...every single one is a most valuable customer. Can you convince them that is what your made of ...that is what will land you the job IMHO!

SPC Josh Tharp https://www.armystudyguide.com/ probably your biggest asset. I am unfamiliar with AGR boards, I would assume they are like Active Duty. CSM's love to ask situational questions.

SFC Steven Borders I also have a small challenge in that as a fresh PS reenlistment, I don't have any uniforms or gear so unless I get issued before the board, I will have to show up in civilian clothes. I presume I should show up in that case in a suit?
It's too close to home and a great fit for me to pass it up plus the board experience will be invaluable.
If I am in civilian clothes, should I still salute the board? Seems like a very grey area but I'd rather ask and yet advice than wing it.

1SG (Join to see) Thank you very much for the specific feedback! Sounds more a board about leadership than the MOS specifically?
I may not be issued uniforms prior to the board as a new PS reenlistment. What would you recommend as far as attire? A suit and tie I suspect?

SPC Josh Tharp - Yeah, I am not sure about going in with civilians. There should be an MOI for you. I would assume you would go in with an NCO to present you to the board. So, that would be a question for him. All military boards I have been to require either ASU's/Greens or ACU's while deployed.

SPC Josh Tharp - Most NCO Boards are focused on general leadership skills. You may get some questions on your MOS as well.
Do people know that you won't have a uniform? I would have your leadership talk to CSM ahead of the board about that. However, yes, I would go with suit and tie and a good explanation about why you are not in a uniform

Is it NG or Reaerves? Are you already a qualified 42A? Know all of the systems, the unit chain of command as well as the unit mission. Read over the announcement, it should have a list of the duties. You can also make contact with the Readiness NCO at the unit. All of this combined with the advice of others should help. Good Luck!!!

SFC, Thanks for the response! it is for the NG. I am not yet 42A qualified, but 42A is the MOS on my re-enlistment contract so I am scheduled to be MOS qualified in 42A. I will learn that information! Thanks!

The board should publish a list of topics.
Then hit Army Study Guide to bone up on the subjects covered.
Make sure your uniform is squared away. You'd be surprised how many Soldiers study all the knowledge stuff and screw up their uniform.
