Hypothetical question for you. If you do one the Ancestry DNA Tests and it comes back saying you're 1% African can you then claim African American for ethnicity. I know some southern states go by the "one drop rule." BTW i''m not joking about this it could seriously increase the number of grants/loans one could apply for and the test is cheap (African only used a example insert any race)

MSgt Ronald Stacy You can claim to be anything you feel like you are. Isn't this country great, or what? If you think you are Black today, Hispanic tomorrow and Caucasian the next day, that's OK. If you think you are male today, but female tomorrow, that's OK, too.

What a wonderfully politically correct answer.

MSgt Ronald Stacy - Wow ... That is the only time in my life that anybody has accused me of being politically correct... :-)

Obviously, I was being facetious ... It is not OK to claim to be female if you are male, black if you are white, or smart if you are Democrat. :-)

LOL......again well spoken

Took my GRE and scored reasonably well, but based on the mailings I'm getting from eilite MBA programs, I bet being Hispanic had something to do with it. I have no intention of going to Stanford, Harvard or Yale, but it is interesting to see them waste their money on me. So the MSgt has a point as being a minority has its advantages.

Thank you for post....not often the "racist" card does not get automatically tossed when someone starts a post like this.....nice to see someone have open honest conversation about it.

Actually, only one ethnic group is required to provide proof of their ethnic claims - Native American. You can CLAIM you are Native, but without tribal affiliation and the TRIBE'S membership card, you can't get credit for the "membership."

As soon as ethnic affiliation was modified in the Coast Guard to where you can self-identify, I changed from being Caucasian (none of my ancestors are from the Caucasus region), to White, Hispanic (ancestors from Portugal), Black (Out of Africa and Lucy), and Jewish (Jewish ancestors). Outside of crappy genealogical research, there is zero proof outside of physical appearance, and we all know that can be misleading.

I've heard that from one of my friends he had to prove he was 8% by bloodline for his "Indian Card" (least that's what they call it here, and the percentage changes by tribe, or so I've been told.) But I still wonder what the NAACP would say??
