I'm a SGT currently in ALC and I just came down on recruiting orders. I have 0 SSG KD time and want to be KD complete before I do a broadening assignment. ETS date is JAN 2023. What are my options

You sign a declination statement and you're leaving the Army. If you're not trying to dodge it, it doesn't get more dodging it than that.

As for you concern that you will be years behind your peers, you will not. You'll promote to SSG, come off recruiting and shortly after that pin SFC around the same time as your peers who went to recruiting later.

I understand where you’re coming from SFC. I just don’t believe that I’m going to be competitive for promotion with no rated KD time as a SSG Squad Leader (I have a year of squad leader time as a SGTP). I could be wrong though as I’m a junior NCO and still learning this process.

SSG(P) (Join to see) and your peers will have no completed broadening time completed.

You have a lot to learn about your MOS promotions. You will want to get hold of the AARs for your MOS promotion evaluation boards. They will tell you what is "actually" considered competitive vs what others have told you is competitive. You have completed the required KD time for your grade, even though you completed it as a SGT. You were rated on your NCOER in that position and that's what the board will rate you on.

The other things you need to look at for your promotion is your Career Map on ACT, the DA Pam 600-25 for your MOS, and the explanation of the promotion board process on HRC Enlisted Promotions website. The latter explains the way the board grades you, and the fist two define what the board members use as a measure to grade you

I say do the duty, be good at it, and move on.

Unless you plan on leaving the Military you have limited options. Once a Special Duty Assignment get their claws in you and cut tentative orders you are pretty much forced into a corner. Either you execute orders as written or get out. Your perspective of not being competitive isn't 100% realistic though. You won't be the first Military member tagged for recruiting when you wanted to be elsewhere. You'll be fine and promote on schedule if not sooner.

SSG(P) (Join to see) In 1980, the 6th Army NCO of the year was feted at the Presidio of San Francisco, HQ, 6th Army during a farewell function for the outgoing LTG 6th Army Commander.
As SSG - - - - -(?), personally greeted the attendees, he introduced himself to each of us by saying, “I want to be a First Sergeant”. I don’t think he accomplished that mission that afternoon.

Find anything higher priority than recruiting, not sure what that is or if there is anything. I know there is nothing you can do to get out of DS, however SFAB got me out of recruiting orders the Friday before I left that Sunday for school.

Side note this was 2017, when they were trying to establish 1st SFAB.

You have to submit a packet and do a commanders interview and an interview with a medical doctor. If that all goes well, you’ll be going.

The thing is that I don’t want to go. I’m not trying to dodge it. Just not trying to be 2 years behind my peers as I’ll have 0 KD time as a SSG

I understand completely. You have to do those appointments and interviews. Other individuals will make their opinion on whether or not they think you’ll be fit for recruiting...sadly it’s out of your hands. I will say, recruiting does seem to hurt 11Bs in their career path. I’d call branch and have a good conversation with them. Perhaps they can put you on assignment as a DS. SSG(P) (Join to see)

I’d be 100% fine with being a DS over a recruiter SSG Clint Underhill

You really cant. Recruiting duty, when done well is a ticket to E7 and a Platoon Sergeant assignment. You would be following 10s of thousands before you. You will likely surpass your current peer group.

SSG(P) (Join to see) I know it’s sucks to hear, but big Army doesn’t really care about your KD time (as much as they say they do). I too went to Usarec as a E5, picked up and spent my first 2 years as an E6 with no KD time. Guys I went to ALC with picked up E7 at the first opportunity, so yes you will be behind some of your peers. However I came out of usarec and back to the line as one of the senior E6s in my company. Almost immediately I got put into a PSG position, and spent the next 2 years making my KD time up (and getting #1 NCOERs due to my position).

Now I’m in the unfortunate position of being likely to end up high on the OML for E7 this year, and I just came down on drill orders. Again my KD time will take a back seat to the needs of the Army.

While it sucks on a personal level, you should look at it holistically. Most of us infantrymen don’t want to do Tradoc jobs, but we are the largest MOS, and therefore more likely to come down on those orders.

On the other hand Usarec is currently over strength, so if you call and talk to Branch, they may be able to help you out.

If you need any other advice, feel free to reach out.

I u see stand how you feel. Many have felt that way before. What I have found is, you’ll still be competitive if not promote faster than your peers. I’d hate for you to lose your opportunities because you think you won’t be competitive for future promotions.

A little Recruiter humor- but also true. You’ll understand soon. Just take the orders, do your best, and be better for it. Best of luck!
