Can I ask you to send me your resume, so i can look at it? Currently I am serving as the Director of Veterans Initiatives for the nova.issa.org (NOVA- Northern Virginia, ISSA International Systems Security Association.)

What is your MOS? what do you want to do in civilian life? Would you take a job in security?

All drop me a resume to robertedwards771 at hotmail dot com and I will provide my two cents on the review.

Take a view at the old fox hole or defensive fighting position and provide a description as the above being an information system, list input/output, firewall, boundary, software, anti-virus and components of an information system.

I have gone through many versions of my resume in the last 3 years and at this point am still not sure if I have the correct version as of yet for what many employers are looking for.

The variety of veteran and military organizations that say they have assistance available, no one yet has really been much help in this area as each has their own version of what it should look like.

Robert,

I will do that in the near future, when I get home, currently in the hospital for surgery, only have my laptop with me for companionship, LOL.

I would have no issue with it, but would prefer if we were referring to physical security mgmt. or supervisory, not the standard guard type position as I don't think physically I could handle it.

Veterans are supposed to get priority, but you need to be careful of the Application Manager as I have seen Veterans turned down because they failed to submitted the proper paperwork for the position. One individual lost out on a position due to an SF10 not being submitted for the position when the individual was not seeking a 10 points veterans preference. They through this out and by the time you appeal, Sorry the position has been filled.

How well suited are you for civilian employment?

PO3 Evans - the biggest question to face is are you willing to relocate yourself to another area of the country at your own expense. A lot of companies will not pay for a relocation package. You can try asking for bonus or a sign on check that is deducted from your annual salary and they may go with the process. Have your looked at linked in or indeed.com for Michigan area. USAJobs might list something for the federal employment. You mention the CAPM, what other certs do you have, PMP (CAPM), CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CISSP or event the CIPP.

J.r. Rossman - you mention a Veteran Mentor Network (VMN), clue this veteran into the whereabouts of this Network. I don't see it or not looking in the right spot on the Rallying Point for this VMN.

Apparently, I have started out on the wrong foot again. I am not soliciting to fill positions. I am offering my two cents of my experience so that the job search maybe a bit less strenuous to those recently getting out of the service.

My name is Robert Edwards I am on linkein, I am a Jack of All Trades and Master of None (Infantry Squad Leader). I have served in the Navy (In god we trust and all others we monitor), US Army Infantry (various other positions), Air National Guard tucson Arizona (getting my BS), Army National Guard Maryland.

I am the Director of Veterans Initiatives for the  ISSA Nova chapter. ISSA stands for the Information Systems Security Association of Northern Virginia. It is comprised of over 500+ members and once a month we meet to have a presentation on a subject pertaining to Cyber Security. the web site is  nova.issa.org.

As the Director of Veterans Initiatives I have been tasked to seek out veterans and offer a free review of their resumes, provide any guidance as to federal programs like the VRAP program or the YearUp Program (19-26 age group), mentoring in IT Security or Cyber Security, I have a link to the President who can call on the entire chapter for volunteers from CIOS down through the ranks.

i do not mean to insult your intelligence, merely trying to get you to understand that the civilian job market is geared towards certifications, and key words in your resume without either one and you will not be seen or given a second glance.

Again, I apologize for the misinterpretation of my earlier postings. I would ask anyone that if you disagree with my statements to speak up and correct me in my error.  United we stand, divided it is the unemployment line.

thank you for your time.

I may be in IT, but my intent is to offer my thoughts on improving or rather addressing your military experience in a different context.  Like can identify the parts of an information system from a depiction of the defensive fighting position.

Any veteran can do IT Security (Certification and Accreditation) as they are involved in this process on a daily basis. What they fail to understand is the current terminology of the process.

Example: Incident Response Plan (IRP) - seven words or less define and provide an example that is found in every household in the country.

Anyone care to give it a try.

how about a Configuration Management Plan (CMP) seven words or less and give an example.

The IRP and CMP requirements/controls/guidelines can be found in the NIST SP 800-53 Rev 3 or 4 as IR-8 or CM-9/SA-10.
