My boyfriend is finishing up AIT and will soon be going to Fort Benning for his airborne training. He got his FDS in Italy and we plan on getting married. I gave birth to our first child while he was in basic training. Should I go to Georgia and get married while he is in still in airborne school? Will his orders be amended or will they be deleted? We don’t want to risk losing his FDS location but also don’t want to pay out of pocket to move overseas. Any advice on what we should do? Will the army work with us because we have a child together?

First it would be next to impossible to get married while attending Airborne training, and they will most likely not cancel his assignment. You can plan to marry right after school, or between schools. You will not be on his orders for Italy, he would have to go alone and apply for command sponsorship. There is a lot to that, particularly for you and the child, you have to be cleared medically before he would receive order (command sponsorship) for you guys to join him. You will need to be patient and it is recommended that you stay with Family or friends as it will take a while.

So no they won’t cancel his assignment either way, there is no time.

Yes you can join him as long as you qualify medically, but it will take a while, likely months.

So if we were to get married before his airborne training and before he departs to his FDS they will not rewrite his orders to include me and our child? Will he still have to apply for command sponsorship? One of his drill sergeants said it’s possible that he will get stuck for 3 months in Benning as they rewrite his orders to include me and our son. And that he might have to get a new duty station because his unit will have already left with out him. Is that likely to happen?

It is not likely but possible that he could have a change of assignment. However, no action can be taken until you are married. The lesser amount of time available between when you get married and he is due to leave makes it harder to do what his drill states. In any case, I recommend you get married sooner than later. Your marriage certificate and your child’s birth certificate are required to take any action. I assure you waiting for AB school is likely too late. The course is too short for anyone to take action amending or changing orders.

Also, you would not have housing at the school in Georgia either, again you have to be on his orders to get housing or funding for housing.

I am not trying to give you greater concerns, but the reality is that the military has very specific rules and policy’s. It is always challenging when couple get married just prior to shipping out, and it’s even more challenging when it is after BT. Again, nothing official can be done until you are married. That is why I recommended staying with Family or friends.

Your BF is already on assignment so the Army will not change his duty station. Being married or having kids has no effect on duty stations. You are not authorized to move overseas to be with him, if you do, you are a foreigner who will receive no support and have to find employment and housing on your own. Once your BF arrives in Italy he can apply for command sponsorship of his dependents, and once approved, the Army will pay to move you there.
