It's 1800 and you just get off work. You let your subordinates go at 1600. You text them reminding them of a personnel inspection tomorrow morning. Your E4 tells you that they "don't need to deal with you outside of working hours" and not to "contact them outside of 0600-1600".

How do you handle this?

This seems like a perfect opportunity for 8 hours of EMI (Extra Military Instruction). I do believe that mustering with the OOD at 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100, and 2145 (right before taps), in a different uniform, for 4 days straight, might teach the individual what defines working hours, and proper interaction with seniors.

CDR Don Wicklund - I'm sorry, I disagree completely and feel strongly that your response is part of the problem with today's military members. People have been accommodating them their entire lives. The minute you swear in, Military bearing is a 24/7/365 REQUIREMENT. Additionally, there is no codicil in the UCMJ that says, "unless you are experiencing a personal problem"! Your personal life is immaterial, you are a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and/or Guardsman FIRST, EVERYTHING else is secondary. Stop coddling these service members. Most military credos, state Duty first, before honor and courage. Please stop lowering the bar!

For the record, I was in a horrible marriage when I was enlisted, my Officer father had been diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer given only months to live, and yet when my command whistled, I jumped, in my maternity uniforms (btw) and with my size 5 pumps on, because it was the Army, not the scouts. So NO sympathy is given to these cry-babies, none, zero.

Has EVERYONE who has posted here forgotten that "the chain is only as strong as its weakest link"? If your chain is full of civilian-minded service members, that need a "time out" for personal issues, I sure as shit don't want to go into battle with your unit. You're going to get me killed and others killed. God bless all of you serving our country in "this mans' military. OMG.

CW4 John Wheatley - thank you for the chuckle, you made me laugh. I was thinking a two week bivouac, might be more appropriate. 14 straight days of 24 hours on duty.

SPC Edvard Svanoe - this might have been at that time, but today any suicide attempt has to be treated very seriously and offer the medical and psychological aid need. Even consider commit the perso to a hospital!

Glad I'm done, have an unstable hot-mess at my 6 would have been a PROBLEM. Should never have passed the psych to get INTO the military to WASTE time & $$$ on a zero.

I'd respond to this, but then words like "premeditated" would start getting thrown around in court.

I can remember a time when "Wall To Wall Counseling" was an option. Not often needed, but very effective when properly applied.

I would put them on duty from 0400-0000 to see how they like those working hours.
