I am asking this out of curiosity because I'm not the best shooter. Do you have to shoot to PCS overseas for every overseas location?

f you are ever PCS'd overseas it behooves you to practice before hand and be the best shot you can possibly be. (Regardless of MOS) I had a signal MOS but spent some amount of time in actual combat that was not expected while in Korea in 1968.

SrA (Join to see) - I've been retired for a few years so my info may be a bit dated..... IF memory serves correctly, the weapons qual is dependent on location, AFSC, and duty position you're being assigned to. Talk to your relocation specialist at your local MPF or Orderly Room. They should be able to give you the information you need. And good luck on the new assignment! I always enjoyed my overseas tours.

I bet every soldier/marine is getting a kick out of this question! =)
SrA Taylor, you are probably in Arming Group B which means you only have to qualify when you are identified by your commander to fill a deployment tasking and for select overseas assignments. You would need to check the PPCs for the location you are being assigned to (potentially being assigned to) to figure out what your requirement is.

It's my impression that you only have to shoot once a year for your basic qualifications. So if you are honestly changing stations every year, then yes you will have to shoot at every location. But as long as your yearly quals are up to date, there shouldn't be any issue.

Don't you have to qualify on your newly assigned shootin' iron at your new duty station? Or are you talking about deploying?

No, in the Air Force you aren't even assigned a weapon....Security Forces, Battlefield Airmen and a handful of others are an exception. This young man is in Arming group B...when he is ready to deploy he will fire on a weapon and take that with him but if he never deploys then he won't shoot at all.

SMSgt (Join to see) - thanks for clarifying that. What is the success rate of arming and qualifying people like that? Twice a year on a weapon that is assigned to a typical soldier is rarely adequate. Can't imagine throwing a weapon at a kid that shot one in basic and that was it. I realize you personally are not the architect of that policy, please don't interpret it that way.

Well, our qualifying standards aren't near as stringent as yours...different mission of course. I haven't seen but a handful of people have to shoot more than once in order to qualify. I have fired the Army courses two different times during pre-deployment training when we were tasked to the Army...the first time was a tad overwhelming and at that point I had been in for 12-13 years!! It was the first time I ever felt truly comfortable with my weapon though. As an engineer we qualify every 12 months unless we are assigned to certain units...I haven't qualified since 2010! There are definitely two sides to the argument...personally, given our mission in the AF, I think the pre-deployment training for members that aren't going forward is sufficient.
Good discussion!!

A South Korea assignment required to go shoot twice a year, just to be ready. Since I enjoy the range, it is not an issue.

Doesn't apply to the AF...at most, we are required to qualify once a year with the exception of security forces and battle field airmen.
