If you have a college degree, go state or federal. Way better benefits. Just remember that you'll never get rich in this job, and pretty much everyone hates you and is looking for you to make a mistake. The only way you can survive in this job is if your heart is in it 100%

I've been in the field that last few days so sorry for the late reply but I am somewhat aware of the pay and I'm okay with that. Im more in it to be able to help the people as much as I can tbh. I didn't join the army for the money lol

The above comment is not all true. Some city agencies have better benefits than federal. Your military time counts for federal side for several things but a local agency has unions and some are very strong with great benefits.
I will retire in 9 years from my LEO and will retire as if I did 23 thanks to military buy back.
You also have other perks which the federal side does not. But it's all based on what you want to do.

While State and Federal have better pay, maybe better benefits, I say go local first. Get a Police or Sheriff job first. This will teach you how to talk to people, how to be safe with suspects, and how to be independent. Officer safety is #1. I’ve been on calls with both state investigators and feds. The always seem to forget or ignore a lot of the basic officer safety issues we deal with everyday. After that, go federal.

I like the idea of going local first especially with the call volume and what you will see in a larger city however this young man needs to know that when you switch departments, you pretty much are at the bottom and rookie again. Law enforcement needs to get a good professional body and push for national certifications much better. I have been a full time RN for 16years and when I change new jobs, I might be the new guy but no kid that just got out of diapers will ever push me around. Not the same in LE or fire services (I am a paramedic as well).

I don’t disagree that it’s hard to jump agencies, but I would rather learn the right way for a couple years then do it in an unsafe manner leaving me and my partner in danger. Different shootings could have been avoided if officer safety was followed. This is everything from FEDS all the way down to locals. MAJ Byron Oyler

Research the organizations that interest you and remember by and large in law enforcement, when you change departments, you train again and start at the bottom again. Same in fire fighting. Chose wisely.
