I am wondering about the possibility of going from the Army NG to the Air National Guard.

So here are my details, I was an active duty MP from 2002-2005 then I came off of active duty and did one year in the Army NG and got out in 2006. Fast forward to this year and I'm at a place now where I wanted to go back to Active duty. Well being out so long and such, I didn't really want to go back to Basic just to have to reclass to another MOS. So I went to Guard route with the hopes that someday I may get to go back to AD as an MP but that looks pretty bleak given that the current business rules haven't changed since May. I am in the only Guard MP unit in my state, we are a law and order unit but there is basically zero room for promotion! Out of our Platoon size detachment, over half are E-4s! There is an Air NG unit close that has a security force element. I was curious if there is a possibly of my MOS transferring over to the Air NG and then eventually going Active in the Air Force? Thoughts? Experience?
I think it's wrong how hard it is to be prior service and not be able to come back in!

I have seen soldier jump from Army Guard to Air. They will usually see how it translates. You still may have to do some training. I know Security Forces do focus on Air Field security also in addition to the typical MP functions. But if you are looking to go AD don't use the Guard or Reserve as a stepping stone. There is a chance that you may be stuck there. You may have better luck talking to an AD Air Force Recruiter. If you don't mind running the risk of it then you can but if you did join the Guard or the Reserve you would have to get a release. That is just one more thing to get in the way.
But let us know what you find out. I am sure there are a few here that will chime in.

SPC Jessica Farringer - That is the down side of the Guard. It is the same for officers in my state. Infantry and Armor will promote. If you pick some other jobs like finance or AG you are not promote as fast if at all.

CPT (Join to see) - I understand Sir, it is incredibly difficult in a unit that is the only one of its kind for the whole state! I was actually shocked at how many E4's were in the unit!
1SG (Join to see)
CPT (Join to see) - Logistics is the non combat branch for those officers looking to promote.

1SG (Join to see) - I have seen many jump to that. If you are Signal or Intel you are not going to make it high up there.
You offer a lot and once you've been through Bootcamp, will not need to repeat it. The Air National Guard is always looking for security forces. Check with an ANG recruiter to see if the unit that is local has openings. If USAF Active Duty is more of what you are interested in, contact their recruiters to see what options they can offer you.
Good Luck.

I switched from the Army NG 11B to the Air NG Security Specialist (Now Security Force) The Security Force has a three part role that encompasses parts of MP, Infantry, and resource protection. Switching should not be a problem if the Air Guard unit wants you and you Army CO will release you. Start at the Air guard recruiter... As far as waiving any tech schools I am not sure if you would be able to waive any, or not. I was able to waive the Infantry part at Ft Dix due to 11B. The Law Enforcement part not only had what you know as an MP, but it also had resource protection and use of force... I am not sure if your MOS had that or not? If so that part may be waivable... I also could be WAY off base here as I did it back when LE and SS were separate... Now they are just Security Forces so the school(s) could be totally different... Again.... start at the Air Guard recruiter...
