Yup,
People must see their own issues to fruition before action can be taken. There has to be an action for reaction or in other words people need motivation and everyone has varying degrees of pain tolerance. People become so engrained into who they are or what they have invested their time in doing as a career that it pains them to challenge themselves in something else or even something better. They keep themselves down because they see it as easier to continue with a little more pain than to be uncomfortable. I find allot of my clients to hate coming to conclusion that their years of career performance is worth 0$. They can only trade their ability and time for more money. They can't sell what they have worked so hard for. They tell themselves that "if I just stick it out things will change or be handed to me." So to your point, people need two things to happen. They need an example or exposure of something better and they need the pressure or motive to do it.

An 18 year old who complains about flipping burgers while in college does not have much to complain about let alone worth listening to. The person who dedicates heart and soul to a company for 19 years who gets the axe before collecting a pension has a complaint of worth but still are just complaints and nothing more. Continue to challenge and embrace change and you will be further than most.
