On a side note, thank for the post. It was refreshing to have something non-political to talk about.

SGT Michael, I think your know the answer to what you should do. I recommend seeing an ACAP advisor to help ensure you have a successful transition. I would also like for you to accept my connection request. Afterwards, I will email you my phone number and schedule a time to talk about your particular situation.

Two Masters are good but what work experience do you have that related field and do you have jobs lined up.

PO1 David Swift, Great questions. I think he already has relevant experience, but the level of relevancy will certainly depend on his targeted industry. The bigger issue is having something lined up before pulling the trigger to get out. I always recommended that people already have a job locked in before transitioning, rather than transitioning out and then trying to figure out the follow-on job. CPT Pedro Meza - Given that he has an MHA and is a practice manager at Landstuhl (based on his RP profile), he is already getting relevant work experience within the Military Health System. Given that he is an NCO and has an MBA, it could also be easily argued that he already has relevant leadership and management experience that can be leveraged in a non-health setting. People tend to underestimate and discount that their military experience is valued in the private sector. The service member just needs to be prepared to articulate how their formal education and work experience can help a private sector organization.

I have two masters degrees. Should I get off active duty? Go Reserves? Does anyone have experience with this?

First I would lay out all my requirements... I need X salary, I need X location, I need X working conditions, ect.. then I would lay out my wants, I want X salary, I want x location, ect..

You need to have a solid handle on what you need and what you want first. Next get out there and research all the different ways you can meet your requirements, not your wants... just your needs. At this point you should no longer feel stuck, even though the path to get from where you are today to where you want to be in a few years may be rigorous.

Then pick an option and a couple backup planes and start pursuing them. Be flexible and keep your eyes open for opportunities yo may not have originally considered.

Check with an AMEDD Recruiter...you probably qualify for a Direct Commission.

Well I am not a recruiter so I don't know the latest accession plans for the Army....I know traditionally the Medical Service Corps as a whole has been overstrength...but many of the MSC AOCs are not. I know in my AOC it has been nearly always understrength and my year group was even worse...all that really does is force a different path for SGT Michael Jones armmed with two Master's is deffinately a good place to be....before transitioning I would recommend at least one position as a Clinic NCOIC...this would certainly open him up for Clinic Manager type positions and HSS type jobs...I have also found that having two Masters can also scare Hiring Managers away from you...I also have two Masters...an MHA and an MA in Information Technology Management my BS is in Biomedical Engineering and I have an AS in Biomedical Engineering Technology...I have been trying to get back into Health IT and no one will hire me...I have been getting returns from jobs that I am over qualified....I have been also trying to get into Federal Healthcare and I have had no luck so far...

I guess I should add more to my post . As my original post does not have enough information . My Masters are in Healthcare Administration and Business Administration. My true passion is to stay active as an MSC officer. However, they are not accepting direct commission for that branch at the moment.

I truly feel the happiest when working in the business side of medicine. The last three years I have worked as the Primary care NCOIC, and practice manager for the clinic. If I do transition my goal is to try and work for the VA to improve access to care for our veterans. As an enlisted soldier , especially as a SGT, I feel limited in what I can do and I am frustrated with feeling stuck and helpless. I killed my self the last few years going to school to ensure I achieve my dream of commissioning into the medical service corp however it seems that is not likely unless I go reserve

SGT (Join to see) - That is a great plan, if the Reserve or National Guard are looking for Officers I'd do it...also the same for the VA...I have much of the same feelings you have...and have been wanting to get into VA Info Tech for some time...at this point I'd take an entry level job, just to get in the system....I have been looking but no luck for me so far....I have known some MSCs that were branch Detailed in another branch like QuarterMaster for a few years, then convert later...but if I remember my friend, he was a Captain in QM, when he converted to MSC he went down a grade to 1LT...not sure if they still do that or not....anyway....I wish you well in your endeavors...

SGT (Join to see) - If the Army MSC is not accepting anyone, you should consider possibly switching services. I would talk to a Navy or Air Force medical recruiter to see what they have to say. They both directly commission (as MSC officers) people who already have their graduate degrees. Doing a direct commission from the Army enlisted ranks may not be an option, but it never hurts to ask. I've had MHA graduates go directly into the AF and Navy as MSC officers, as recently as this summer. If any of them had been prior service, even from a different service, that would have made them even more competitive. The type of accreditation for your graduate degrees might also play a role though. They may have requirements for AASCB (for the MBA) or CAHME (for the MHA) accreditation.

SGT (Join to see) To be completely honest none of us can advise you in this one. This is an individual decision that can only be made based on your individual desires. The first time I got out it was a mistake (in some ways). Yes I got to "be there" to raise my kids. However, I missed it every day. This time, while not my idea (medical discharge) I know it was time. I always told my Soldiers that I supported them in whatever decision they made. That is as long as they had a plan. Not a mythological plan, but a real executable plan that was already in motion. You appear to have said plan, therefore do what your heart tell you to do.

How much time do you have in and have you considered WOC or OCS? The retirement benefits you are going to get if you stay active or reserve have a big future value. Just Tricare for Life covers your future Medicare deductibles , copay and meds for you and your spouse. The extra bucks don't hurt either.

That is a decision that has a lot of personal factors, for one in the medical field you can make a lot of money as I am sure you know.

What are your degrees in? (Very impressive by the way) Why not consider an officer program to take advantage of and leverage your education into a new phase of your career. I current am in the reserves and have a BA in History and an MS in Education and am trying to go active duty on the officer side. The reserves is often a shock for those coming off active duty. It is what you make of it but can be very tedious if all you do are drills. There is also a DCO program which is like OCS Light. It is a 2 week school in order to be an officer on the reserve side. Good luck!
