I just received orders to Turkey. What can I expect?

I was stationed at the Lik about a year and a half ago. It's already changed since then due to security concerns (now unaccompanied, and down to 12 month tours). Currently, you won't get to experience all the freedoms we used to have like exploring the local area and walking the Alley. With that said, it was an amazing experience I would recommend to try. Since it is such a small base, it is a very tight knit group and leadership is always setting up events to keep you entertained. There are tons of rotators out to Europe as well, so you can take leave in Germany or wherever you choose to experience the travel bug. The weather is great, the people are nice and Turkish food is awesome. If you joined the Air Force because you wanted to travel, I wouldn't turn down this opportunity.

It has been awhile, but as I recall the quickest way for a GI to get into serious trouble in Turkey was to flirt with a Turkish woman. Other than that, if you love history and want something to share with your kids and grandkids someday, I'd say go for it.

I was at Incirlik in support of Operation Northern Watch, which dates me a bit. Our mission was in support of the PL2 aircraft, and not so much law enforcement. Incirlik was a great place. The Turks, both the military personnel and civilians, were always very polite and easy to get along with. And the food was awesome!

In June of this year, they had a potential coup attempt, and that kicked off FPCON Delta for a while. I expect that will be an ongoing threat.

My answer to you is the same I gave my brother first you have 6 yrs in 5 were spent in Hell yes I too was SF at Minot 2000-2004 and it sucked then too, but you have an opportunity to go overseas dont turn it doen it 12 monthd use the remote to your advantage from there go to iceland, then ask for germany and if youre into outdoors Alaska see the world man makd the best of your experience not a day goes by i didnt wish i was still in... are you 5th or 91st

I was assigned to Incirlik in 88 - 91 and I loved it. It is very hot there and you will get sick on the local food - guaranteed. They used the give Peptobismol as a welcome gift. If you are female wear the proper clothing off the base and respect their customs and courtesies. We are guests in their country and the bases belong to them as well. Hydrate and enjoy, be aware of your surroundings and do not draw attention to yourself- they do not play around over there.

Incirlik is now a remote assignment. 12 months, no dependents. Not sure about off base lodging or security.

I was there in 87 and 97/98 with my Guard Unit. Enjoyed being there both times. The winter time wasn't the greatest rained a lot. My son was stationed there with the 39th SF and he enjoyed his time there did a lot of traveling. As far as the USAFE thing it worked for my son. After Turkey he went to Italy, Kosovo and Azores enjoyed himself the whole time he was over there. Lots of traveling. Now he is in the states and dislikes it will be getting out next yr.

My son is currently stationed at Incirlik (USAF SF) and they are base confined. There is no ability at present to go off base and see the country, due to the ongoing security threats. No family members or civilians are present, as all have been returned to the US several months ago. You will work, train, eat and sleep.
