Thank you SSGT Franzen. I have already started an extensive work out routine to get into better shape. I've always worked manual labor jobs so I'm not out of shape but I administered a PT test for myself recently and my PT score isn't exactly where I wanted it to be.

I just started the enlistment process for the Army National Guard. I was an active duty infantryman 7 years ago. Any advice?

chances are you can re-class or stay in the same MOS if you like what are you doing, make sure your recruiter can guaranteed for a school before signing, sometime your new unit won't send you to school and you will get put into a unit spot you won't like!

same BS except you only deal with in for 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year ... unless you get a technician position, AGR or state active duty orders

With all due respect SGT, after reading your comment and your profile it seems to me that you may need to find another career choice. Especially if your so disenfranchised with the army. Why stay if it's all "BS" to you? That is my greatest fear. Getting in and being under the authority, guidance, and mentorship of NCOs who have become stagnant. My goal is to have a career and use the NG as a means to an end. A college degree, commission, and better life for my family. Not to just do my drill time and collect a check.

sorry PFC Johnson don't mean to throw you off (and i do need to update this profile) i have gotten a tech position now and it makes being in the guard all the more exciting ... as an M-day soldier i was becoming stagnant and unhappy in the guard with thoughts of not re-enlisting but now being able to do my job in the 91 series i have a new love for being in. now the good yes you get a little extra check each month its nice to have ... the bad as an M-day you don't do your job and most drills are the same, PMCS, mandatory death by powerpoints, lunch then waiting to go home ... i saw a lot of AD guys come in ready to rock and roll only to be told to slow their roll ...i applaud you for your goals and plead with you to achieve each and every one to the highest of standers, don't be "that guy" who is there for a check, strive for greatness

Idk if the Army still does this but I would figure you would be doing Boot Camp again; from what I heard, you won't bunk with the booters since you're prior enlisted. Also you have a bit more room to stretch things like phone use.

I can't be 100% on this but I know one thing. If you are with the new booters, be prepared to be smoked...a lot; more than you did when you first enlisted.

Best of luck to you and welcome back!

Stay lean, you know, if you wanna be infantry, you gotta be lean. Practice shooting, knife throwing, surikin throwing, spelling on that lady one. Don't sleep much, stay up at night, ready yourself for the attack. Self torture, use your imagination here.

Seriously LT? Knife throwing? Come on now. I was infantry on active duty. I know what is involved with being an infantryman. When I say advice I mean as far as transition from active duty to national guard goes.

Ok, I'm showing some old school, hand to hand, too much is not used in the guard. Just don't open yourself up for the CO to bust you for something I'm sure you already know.. PFC(P) Joshua Johnson -

Ahhhhhh. The 48th. Any prior mech experience?

Have an open mind. It's different than AD. You'll see guys that have grown up together in the unit. The 1SG might work for a SPC in the civilian world, etc etc. It's a different culture sometimes and takes some getting used to. You've been out for seven years so it might be too bad.

SGM Billy Herrington - Msg are we talking AGR or back to regular active duty? i have read and heard a lot of prior service saying they took the bait and there state ended up not releasing them. But my knowledge of the guard is very limited.

SFC(P) (Join to see) - he will only enlist for one year. It's a guardism, try one, after that year he will not re-enlist in the guard. He will ETS. Then go see an AD recruiter. He needed a waiver, the guard is pretty lenient on waivers. The state can't hold him (unless stop loss) beyond his ETS. They don't have a dog in the hunt.

AGR in the guard is a whole different animal.

SGM Billy Herrington - well the ets and 1 year contract makes sense. But is it in his contract he is guaranteed active duty after that year? after that year he will be considered just regular prior service going back to active duty? that's the part that makes it more interesting. Because Ive known a lot of people the past couple years try and get back active duty being prior service and they were not accepting them except into certain mos and 11b was defiantly not one of them but then again he is only a private which is hard to explain with 7 years of active duty being said before and being a private.

well that is a pretty sweet contract being offered 1 year guard then active duty.

It's not a guarantee for active after. He will have to go through the accessions process just like any other prior service.
