I'm meeting with a recruiter to discuss the Health Professions Scholarship Program. I'd really like to hear some experiences of other physicians in the military. How is the job and what should I know going into the program?

If you like being a Marine, you should go Navy, and be an FMF doctor. Far too few volunteer for the FMF, so it would be a pretty sure thing...

These days, military medicine is so joint that otherwise, what service you join isn't all that critical...

Thanks LCDR Matlow! Yes, I've seriously considered being what I think the Navy calls a "greenside" doctor. My question was always how sure can I be that I will end up with Marines if that's what I want? So you are suggesting that it is a pretty sure bet?

Thanks again,

Hi Sgt Howard, the only way to know for sure would be to talk to the folks in the Navy Medical World (e.g. the Medical Officer Detailers - you know them as monitors in the Corps). Contact them through the BUPERS website to get more information. BTW, it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to do a Navy tour; you could end up getting the best of both worlds if you end up on an LHD for instance. Then you could get your FMF pin AND your SWMDO pin...

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
