I'm getting orders to Fort Irwin in March. Do y'all have any advice (as it is my first duty station)?

I'm mainly curious about the barracks life, stuff to do (if anything to do on base), and what are some words of wisdom for entering into the "real army".

Real wisdom-
Start investing part of your pay monthly into a Thrift Savings Account. Next, invest in a ROTH IRA. Pay the max amount. Do not purchase a new 40k car. When available start work on college courses. Learn your vehicle and know to maintain it. Observe your NCOs and Officers. Be 15 minutes early, PT every morning, read regulations and don't listen to the barrack's lawyers. That should be a start.

i especially agree with the new 40,000 car and not listening to barracks lawyers. Also, never believe what another private tells you. the Private Knowledge Network is not trustworthy.

SGM Bullard- I have been told by several new Soldiers that one cannot begin college courses until their first enlistment is up. This does not make any sense to me. Have you heard of any changes in the education system for military members?

LTC (Join to see) - sir,
I have not heard that. When I was at Fort Irwin they really pushed college . They even gave the Soldiers the opportunity to go to classes during the day two days a week. We setup computers in our Troop area for student to have Internet access to do their classes.

SGM Jeff Bullard - Irwin was my last duty assignment and I visited the post Ed Center and talked with the Director. He was begging Soldiers to take classes. The sad thing is there is a large pot of money for the education system and Soldiers lose out on close to 4K per month that that could put toward classes.

Save your money, take college courses and stay away from the nearest town Barstow which is about 30 miles from post.

San Bernardino does have some things to do but if you plan accordingly, you can go to the beach, visit LA or Las Vegas. Just be vigilant in your travels.
