Your Basic Allowance for Housing is paid at either a with Dependents rate or without Dependents. 1 dependent or 50, same rate. The difference might be $50-100. The BaH is tied to locality by zip code of where you are stationed. Travel dollars are different.

Jonathan Lewis - whether you sign a contract or not, that's between you and the recruiter. My understanding is you don't have an MOS that you qualify for and your contract until you go to MEPS. Not my department. Soldiering is not just some 'job'. I wish you luck in your journey.

I was trying to answer your original posted question. SSG (Join to see) answered the travel portion. I answered the part about "housing assistance". If you live in governement quarters, you forfeit the basic allowance for housing (BAH). If you live off post, you draw BAH with out dependent rate if you were single. If you are married or have the majority of custody of a child, you draw BAH at the with dependents rate.

While I am currently a Chaplain Recruiter, I still had to go to recruiting school and learn at least the basics. From what I can remember (and my experience) you can lock in your job there at the center. That is what they will push for. Now, a 34 is passing but you won’t have all of the options that you will want. My advice to you since you have a family is to choose something that can benefit you down the road when you’re out. Just in case you only do 3 years, hate it and want out, you’ll have the experience in something to fall back on. In my case, I didn’t find the job that I wanted when I went into the office so I went to MEPS to choose it. I was pretty picky and stuck to my guns until I got what I wanted. I was a bit older, had a family and was working on my graduate degree. So, my approach was as I have recommended to you. Seeing what I can get that would help me whenever I get out.

As LTC Mackay pointed out, this should be a career choice, not just a “job” because it’s a pretty big commitment and a major sacrifice that you are asking your family to make. Not saying that you can’t do 3 years and get out or anything but in my opinion, it’s much easier and less stressful for you and your family if you look at it as more than just a paycheck.

Did you understand the pay structure and BAH calculator when your googled it? It’s pretty straight forward but easy to say that to someone who’s been in for almost 7 years lol.Jonathan Lewis

They come once you’re done with AIT and get your orders for where you are going. You will receive your rank pay with dependents. So, it’ll be more depending on where you’re going to be stationed.

I’ve had it where mine meet me. To me it’s just easier. You’ll receive pay for moving them and all as well. The military pays for your move and pay you as well. To include your wife and child.
