I'm NG & was notified I'd be deploying in about 4 wks. Trying to put my mother in assisted living home but need more time. Should I ask? How?

Is your mother your dependant in DEERS? If so, that would help.
Exceptions are made all the time for guys deploying. Talk to your readiness NCO, then 1SG, then commander. It will probably have to go to at least the BDE level, maybe higher. Transparency is the key and keeping them inundated with info. It doesn't hurt to present them a plan as soon as you ask with a timeline. That will give the impression that you are legitimately wanting to deploy; you just need to tie up some loose ends first.

1SG Al Brown - wish I could. DFAS requires I provide >50% of her income. Other than the mobile home and odds and ends that I provide, her primary income is SSI/Disability and SNAP/Food Stamps so she can't qualify as a Dependent for me.

SSG (Join to see) - you should tabulate everything you spend on her to see. I know she's mom; but if you can get her as a dependent it will make life easier. The cost of her housing would negate any disability she receives I believe. SNAP shouldn't count as income for DEERS purposes.
Just something to look at in the future. It can also help on taxes and her healthcare.

Hi SSG Connery
Yes you still can make her your secondary dependent although she receives the benefits you named. I did he same thing for my mother. You can message me at [login to see] if you wanna discuss... SSG (Join to see) -

SSG (Join to see) - I'm definitely going to call my DEERS office Monday for more information on this. Especially after I get her moved in I'll be providing a lot more in tangible financial help which will be easier to document

Thanks everyone. I've discussed everything with my Unit Ministry Team and decided to go forward with a memorandum to my CO Command Staff notifying them of the circumstances, plan of action, and my request. Hopefully, the CMD will understand that this move will make me more available for future deployments and allow me to be a fully mission capable leader, and I will still be an option for this current deployment as a late-deployer.

check with the command and can go to the TAGs office and ask for some additional time and state assistance... depending on the state they actually have a personnel family assistance office...

I'd like to initiate an informal discussion with command prior to having to complete a hardship package with G1. I really don't like the idea of going to State.

but i was just providing additional resources
Hang in there and Hopefully your command will work with you...
Best of Luck out there...

SFC George Smith - thanks and you're right, they are a good resource and in this situation they're the final authority for mobilization decisions

Talk to your SGM and Command Team. Make it clear that you are not trying to avoid the deployment, but need to get your dependent mother settled in before you go. They should have slots for temporary stay-behind orders and can just cut you a separate set of orders to catch up to them down range... all of this is dependent on them though. They do have the option of telling you to suck it up (if it is a mandatory mob).

Sorry to hear about your mother. Talk to the commander, S1, and Career Counselor.

Update: Asked, and was denied. That's OK though I'm putting things in motion so I can move forward.

use your chain of command, if your unit as a family support get them to try to help

Is there someone who could do it on your behalf I went through this and I got a power of attorney. IT is very difficult and will consume your free time quite often but it will help dramatically until she's fully settled in.

Is your mother listed as one of your dependents? If so, see if they can work something on the regards of financial/medical reasoning. You may have already done this, but with care in a assisted living, does she have an alternative POA in your absence, etc. etc.
If you can show a plan to your CoC with your request chit for extention, they should be able to work with you.

I'm definitely going to look into making her a secondary dependent.
The AC apartment does two things: 1) Gives her in home healthcare 5 days a week, which she needs because of her end-stage COPD, neuropathy, and cardiovascular issues. 2) Puts her 5 minutes from my sister who will be my POA while deployed. Seems win/win.
