I plan on joining the Florida National Guard and my top choice MOS is 15T. Any tips on being successful in the guard and as a civilian?

I’ve spoke to the recruiter and there is slots available in that MOS at Brooksville FL 171 AV about an hour and a half away from my home town. If I make this my mos I would like to be successful both in the guard and civilian wise by pursuing a career in that field. Thanks

171st is an excellent unit. FLARNG is the finest national guard organization in the country bar none. I started out in it's premier unit 2nd BN, 124th Inf and finished in the 164th ADA. Be motivated but not obnoxious, understand that not all(including some of your superiors)are as motivated as you, do not mistake experience for lack of motivation, show the proper respect at all times and always, ALWAYS volunteer! Best twenty years of my life. Didn't seem like it at the time, but hindsight is golden. You will get out of it only what you put in.

Thank you so much for the response! Very encouraging I’ve decided that this is what I’m gonna do and if all goes well I will be sworn in by Easter this year. I will definitely try to apply your tips. I would eventually like to be a crew chief as a 15T so I know I have to be the best I can if I want to be successful. Glad to hear that the 171st is a great unit. My recruiter said the same

The Florida Guard as a whole is an excellent organization. Your "let down" from coming out of basic to your unit is typical of most everyone. Give it time. After a while you'll see the wisdom of how and why things are done "different". If you pull a second hitch, you'll stay until you retire. I would highly recommend that. You don't know where you'll be when you're 60. The money could be the difference between a monthly mini vacation and living in a cardboard box under an overpass and eating cat food. You can do a weekend a month and two weeks a year standing on your head.
