I want to be Special Forces, but I don’t want to lose my family. Any advice?

You're going to have to decide which is more important right now, your dreams or your family. You'll be gone more than you are home if you choose this route

Dont ever say you want to avoid the big army again. Even if it is true you see how many folks got their knife hands out when you say that dumb shit? Stay fucking gray and look tight as fuck so these people stay off your back and you can do your job in peace. Good luck

I am amazed at the number of young guys so gung ho about getting to SF, It's NOT what the Majority think it is, I was recruited/invited to go try out for an Assignment with them no less than 7 times in 10 years, I sat through the briefings, talked one on one with guys already there, and had several friends who went and made it to a team, It takes a special breed to go the distance. Nearly every comment Here gives good advice about what to consider before a packet should be dropped....

To start off get your head out your ass. If you have to ask, then it's not for you.

A tough decision for anyone. I would suggest you drop your packet and see how it goes. Remember SF is strictly volunteer service, you can stop at any time. Also, many go through the initial selection and do very but, they are selected for one or another reason. My two cents.

Special Forces is not going to be the out you're looking and it will definitely cause the stress and anxiety on your family that you are concerned about. As SFC Boyd and CSM Chavaree have already stated, you are misinformed. SF works for Big Army, just like everyone else.
Special Forces isn't going to make you "high speed," you need to be high speed to qualify. Special Force is not a place for those who don't like the Army to hide, it is a place for those who excel at Army to shine.
Don't want to deal with "Big Army"? Go back to civilian life.

You might not realize it, but you have already answered your own question. If the reason you have not dropped the SF packet is that you are worried about jeopardizing your relationship with your family - It is because you know, deep down inside, that being SF will jeopardize your relationship with your family. I was one of the original Night Stalkers (TF 160 - later 160 SOAR). I am proud of my service - but I left because I didn't want to gamble with my home life. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have learned from life that when it comes to human activities, there are no solutions - just trade-offs. You have a good thing going, don't fool yourself into thinking this decision will not come with trade-offs. Are you willing to take that gamble?
