i was in the Louisiana Army National Guard and deployed to Hati For operation Uphold Democracy and was awarded honorary spurs. i was not attached to a cav unit. Is this a really big deal, i was never able to find out
sorry for the misunderstanding. there was a military police cav unit in hati and i went through there classes and did several missions with them and then was awarded a certificate naming me and several others honorary spurs

I'm confused and I was CAV almost my entire career. Who awarded spurs in a non-cav unit?

Here is some "CAV 101" MSgt Keith Hebert Spurs are earned by being with/attached to a CAV unit and completing a "Spur Ride" (cause we don't say "hazing") and some units are more brutal than others. Most had formal boards, a few had actual stables that required TLC. Once the "maggots" went through and got the thumbs up by the team's spur hoolder and the head table blessed off on it, you would get your spur certificates. If there was no time/opportunity for an actual spur ride (for the attached units) they may have been awarded "honorary spur certificates". Silver spurs are awarded to the cherries and gold spurs go to spur holders who go to combat with a CAV unit. Spur, saber, and stetson etiquette can be made into a novel so I am giving the highlights. Spurs are worn facing up for married personnel and down for single spur holders (can you guess why?) Anyway, inthe CAV world, there are spur holders and there are maggots. Outside of the CAV world, there are cowboys and non-cowboys (among ther hateful and OBVIOUSLY jealous terms)....lol. You arre authorized to wear your spurs to any and all CAV functions. Posers will be quickly identified and dealt with.

First day Qualify "Expert", Blow up the PT test, and ace a few other proficiency tests
Second Day Ruck up and perform dismounted movements with some very physical tasks intermixed followed by a road march back.
Third day history of CAV this includes reciting Fiddler's Green, my unit was also 19 series MOS holders but I think this has changed and E4 and up.
The Stetson is a given but the spurs are earned.
Scouts Out!
