I was discharged from the Army National Guard honorably (RE-3, missed too many days due to family reasons). Could I re-enlist onto AD?

Yes you can. I was also discharged honorably from the U.S Army National Guard of New York for misconduct with an RE-3 code. I have just begun in processing into active duty after sitting on my ass in IRR for the last 5 years. From what I understand I had to wait 3 years to attempt re-enlistment. You will need a waiver and a recruiter who is willing to work with you. Good luck. I am waiting to be cleared and given a MEPS date.

@spc Keelan. I just Re-enlisted back into the guard and it was easier to get a recode 3 waiver for misconduct than AD; also make sure you have your discharge paper work not just your DD214. @spc Jov. My recruiter said it’s 2 years but also try other states if you really wanna get in!

All I recived when I got out was the nbg-22 witch is the guards version of the dd214. I was planning on contacting a recruiter tomorrow to try and start the process.

@spc keelan. Well if you got discharge for misconduct it may be hard to re-enlist without the discharge packet cause they should of typed of something. What was your separation code also?

If I'm understanding this right, you got discharged with a general under honorable for missing AT because your father-in-law died in a motorcycle accident? I don't know what policy they were looking at when they did that, but unless there's more to the story you got the BGW.

Thats kinda how i feel about it. Theres nothing more to what happened that. He was in the accident just a day before we shipped out for a.t. never missed any drill dates prior.

Let me be honest. If you cannot make Drill for family reasons how would be able to hang with AD? Besides, how was your discharge characterized?

Like i stated in a previous comment my wife's father had passed to keep it short, it happened right before our annual training. I had never missed a drill date in my entire time in the guard until that point. I was discharged with general with honorable conditions. My nco staff tried to make it work for me to stay in but policy is policy and i missed to many days because of freak situation(father in law was killed in motorcycle accident)

SPC (Join to see) - It's understandable that life happens when you're a Soldier, but nothing is preventing life from happening again. If you go AD, you're apt to miss much more than training.

You guys need to realize that life does at times happen. One traumatic incident and you're talking like this is going to be a recurring thing. How about some support and positivity, you know, like real leaders?

One possible pitfall, regardless of your RE Code, is that there are different medical standards for retention (to stay in) and for enlistment. Once you get out, you may be subject to the more stringent enlistment standards.[Former Recruiting Office Supervisor - ANG]

Is there any official source on this? I know for the Army they use AR 40-501 and it doesn't delineate between prior service and initial entry.

I think there is more to this, you can miss AT and still have a good year. That said you can get in you will just need a waiver. If your narritive reason for discharge was unsat performance it’s fairly easy. If it is for hardship you’d have to prove the condition no longer exists.

It was an extended AT to Moldova (not sure on the spelling) instead of 2 weeks it was for 4 weeks was the reason definitive reason i was told. And it is for unsat proformance. Thanks for the comment.
