I will be submitting my voluntary reclassify packet this week. Which path is best, 12B Combat Engineer or 19D Cavalry scout?

12B and 19D are currently short and taking E5 sergeants for voluntary reclass. My goal has always been to reclass to 11B but was told I couldn't twice. The above MOS's are the closest to it so i'd like to take advantage of this opportunity and finally make this career change that I should've made after my first term. I am highly interested in the above two MOS's but I would like to know from leaders which MOS is the better choice and who spends more time training on their craft. A little insight on the day to day operations would be much appreciated as well. Thank you in advance.

That is a hard question. I would look at the MOS density, the turn over rate, then ultimately end up blowing stuff up. There is also the outside career aspects which in both cases are pretty much nothing... but 12B blow stuff up!

That’s awesome. First question is, how did you make that happen. If I could do the same, I would.
Second, How are all three similar to each other when it comes to training?
Third, between 12B and 19D, what do you recommend me choosing. What did you like most about both.

Because reservists can jump into different MOS slots. It’s weird, but just because they sit in a particular MOS slot doesn’t mean they’re fully qualified in that MOS.

Why can't you reclass to 11B?
If you're going to be combat arms, why not go to RANGER SCHOOL!!! (It'll make you tough! So tough!!) and reclass to 11B that way?

SFC, thank you for your response. I’m fully aware of the Ranger 4187 option, however I want to leave my current MOS as soon as I can. And as soon as I get to my next unit, they will know right away that I’ve been trying to get to Ranger for the last 4 years now.
I haven’t attended the school yet because of the work tempo and short personnel of my MOS. I’ve been the only Supply rep in the company up until recently.
First two reenlistments, my retention told me I didn’t have a high enough CO score for 11B(I have a 90 now). Second time, there were no school dates for OSUT.
My plan now is to get into a combat MOS, reap the benefits of the MOS including Ranger school and then 4187 in 11B and serve in the 75th RR.
Ranger school is a big reason why I’m doing this reclass. 12B and 19D will be willing to send me, unlike my current MOS.

I was a 19d for 8 years I loved it. All my units were tight night and everyone was close. We had a lot of b.s. details but had fun doing them I would go back in a heart beat but due to the fact I etsed and am trying to go back in with an h2 profile I am disqualified from it. That makes me sad but also opens a world of options for me. If you decide to go delta you won't regret it. Get your spurs and mount up. IF YOU AINT CAV YOU AINT SHIT

I agree with SGT Clifford I would say personally as a 12B myself I am also a little biased but out of the two 12B is the closest you’ll get to infantry but again it does depend on your unit. You receive a decent amount of MOUT training as well as demolition training and at some point you have to do EQT as well which are all the engineer qualification tables all in all very fun and interesting. But be ready to do a lot of manual labor. They well have you pounding pickets and laying C-wire at some point

CSM, I noticed you were previously the CSM for a TRADOC battalion at Fort Leonard wood. Can you inform me on what the OSUT consist of and where MOS-T's get placed in training. Will we start at week one or be inserted towards the MOS training portion of OSUT. Either is fine by me, I would just like to know what to expect.
Thank you in advance.

SSG (Join to see) - The MOS-Ts are housed separately from the rest of the OSUT Soldiers so you would not be under the thumb of the DI's 24-7. You would be inserted at the start of the AIT portion of the POI.
I called over this morning and verified that there has been no change to the process.
Generally speaking the POI will train you on : Obstacles, Demo, Basic Military Bridging (erector sets on steroids), Obstacle Breaching, Engineer Recon (very basic concepts), Mine Detectors and a host of other tasks.
If you are wanting in depth info call 1st EN BDE and ask for SFC Rhodes the S3 training NCO at [login to see] . I have served with him before and he is very professional and helpful.
