I hear folks saying things like I'd love to be a young man in today's world and maybe it's because I'm in my late 40's (I'm forty-eighteen, refused to turn 50) but I see this world and really wonder if the USA will still be a "WORLD POWER" when my grandsons (age 5 and age 1) get to be young men.
What do you see the world like when those boys graduate from high school?

If we as a nation fail to remove our collective heads from Rectal Defilade, I see a real crappy future for our children/grandchildren....we fail to protect our borders from illegal aliens, we continue to provide for far too many that are and should be providing for themselves, we are alienating some of our closest allies and we have grown week overall on the global stage...things need to change and fast IMO....

SGT Richard H. That is one of the reasons that I believe that we should have transitioned to a "Personal Retirement Account" whereby whatever I have paid in as far as taxes, goes directly into an account tied to my SSN.

SFC William Swartz Jr but then Congress and Senate couldn't get their hands on it! We would never want to deny them of our hard earned money now would we?

SGT Hanner, that is the true definition of "WE EARNED IT"
I did work all those hours and still do, but I may never see any of it coming my way... That is MY MONEY, I"m the one who earned it, but they get it and give it to folks who are not earning it in any way shape or form.

I ask myself this question all the time. In fact last night my wife and I were talking and she said
"We need to stay out of stuff in the world, we are no longer the world power, so let's stop being the world's police"
Great response!
I agree with SFC William Swartz Jr I see a sad future for my two boys.

I agree! Why in the hell are we giving aid to other countries to fix their problems when we have our own homeless, not to mention the disservice being done to our Veterans past and present.

This is a thought that crosses my mind often and as a young man, not yet 30, who is recently married and wants to start a family I fear for what my children will face. I already had a more difficult time making a career and being successful than my father did and I expect it to get worse for my children.
Its a sad place to be when you are not even 30 and you fear for your and your families future. Especially when you are a hard working go getter type.

A view points on what the next generation or two is likely to see:
- Every nation or culture goes through peaks and valleys. The trick is to know if the current valley is temporary or permanent. I argue it is too soon to tell and could be either. If we produce leaders for the nation then the current valley is temporary. If not it will be permanent and get worse.
- Some things change while some things do. Things that do not change include human nature, the terrain (generally speaking), basic reasons for conflict. Things that do change include technology, human understanding, rate of technology change.
- Historically, empires rise and fall (Byzantine, Persian, Roman, Mongol, British, etc). The length of their supremacy varies from as little as 80 years to over 500 years. If you think the US is an empire then we have only been an empire for a little over 100 years. Generally empires fall either because they corrupt from the inside (Roman), face a new external threat (Ottoman), or a combination of both. I think the US's main problem right now is an internal problem. We are generaly getting dumber, fatter, and listening to the fringes on both the left and right rather than working the compromise in the middle which is what we historically have done.

COL Jason Smallfield, PMP, CFM, CM If you have not seen the movie Idiocracy you need to see it. It is one of my favorite movies. Sadly when I first saw it I thought it could never come true, with each year I get older I think it might.

Idiocracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Idiocracy is a 2006 American satirical science fiction comedy film directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, and Terry Crews. The film tells the story of two people who take part in a top-secret military hibernation experiment, only to awaken 500 years later in a dystopian society where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism have run rampant and that is devoid of intellectual curiosity,...

I have seen the movie Idiocracy and unfortunately think we are living it. Some data points that I think support this conclusion:
- We have transitioned from an MDMP Army to a battle drill Army.
- Research now is more Google which is good for access to information but bad for critical analysis of that information.
- The writing ability of the last CGSC class is the worst that has been measured in about the last 15 years.
- Kids are not taught how to write in cursive any more and therefore can only print rather than signing their names.
- Kids use calculators in school and therefore do not have a fundamental understanding of numbers. Ask a kid what 39 x 41 is and they have no clue it should be about 1600.
- Watch any kid operating a cash register try to make change for a $20 bill in their head without the register telling them what it is.
The above are all just indicators individually but collectively they show a bad trend that does not bode well for future generations.

COL Jason Smallfield, PMP, CFM, CM I totally agree. I use to joke that I worked with all the people who failed the McDonalds Hamburger/French Fry button test. It would be funny if it weren't so true......and sad.

Oh, hell no!
The one thing that I am glad for, is a limited life span so that I wont have to see where this country and world will end up. I see nothing good on the horizon, unless we finally get those flying cars promised for so long. I'm also glad that I don't have children to be worried about.
