If America needs you again, would you be willing to return to active duty one grade lower?

If you read Once an Eagle, you know the hero was up and down in permanent and temporary ranks based on the needs of the military...but you might not know that one of my personal heroes, Gen. Andrew Goodpaster (SACEUR) took a downgrade to 3- star rank to command his beloved West Point. If we had full mobilization or even partial mobilization, what about you?

If I were called back I would serve proudly even as a lower rank, with one detail, they would have to ensure that this would not affect my retirement grade once I served the term I was called back for.
If the Army needed me I would come back and serve not just for the Army but for my fellow Soldiers.
After all I will always be a Soldier and Proud of it.

I was mobilized as a retiree recall from 2003-2005 and served under my last retired rank. The amazing thing was once on the retired list, my pay entry basic date (PEBD) is remainsed unchanged. I retired with 24 years AFS in in January 2001 to find that I maxed the E-8 pay schale when I came back on.

This one is easy! Yes I would... And really still do as a DA Civilian. Not sure if I would be of use still as a SNCO... as I have evolved since retiring... But Yes I would! Funny as it sounds, I ran PT with my ORG at Fort Leavenworth this fall... And the SGM called me out for cadence calling... I still had it after 9 years later... And called it for about 1.5. It was fun and surprised the crap out of about 100 folks. Good times good times!

LOL...who cares what the new kids thinks. That including the new kiddie wet behind the nose E-5 and E-6 if they call back enough of the old salts. The ones who didn't need an E-4 Mafia to hold discipline in the ranks, because the did it themselves. The same ones, that know just how far they can be disrespectful, and still sound like they being civil to you, and you don't even notice that they were saying you are fucking asshole, get out of face, as they told you to have a nice day.

Too easy -- I would do it in a heartbeat. Can't think of anything more important than fighting to protect our country and my loved ones.

I earned my rank and spent 23 years on active duty. If the military needs me...I would return...but I would expect full rank and even consideration for the next one. Having a few years of civilian (government service) under my belt should also be considered.

Define "needs."
If we're talking about another war of aggression like we spent over the past decade waging on two fronts, then no I wouldn't rejoin. I take great pride in my service and my two combat deployments, but I have no illusions of "defending freedom."
That said, should a real threat arise (read: not an abstract noun) that impacts American citizens then I will gladly and willingly rejoin at any rank and in any capacity the military sees fit. If for any reason the military wont take me back, perhaps due to medical reasons, and there's domestic fighting then I would grab a weapon out of my safe and find some other constructive way to put bullets down range. If there's one lesson that Iraq and Afghanistan should have taught us is that a very small, but highly motivated force can wreak havoc on a significantly superior enemy.

The only way I would return is if we first remove every single domestic enemy from the US government as they are the ones giving the orders to the troops we currently have. Right now, the country is in dire need of protection from those in charge, but until those in charge are removed, then the entire military service is likewise operating apart from the law of the land. So if they call on me, hell no, but if I am called to remove those who are destroying this nation from within, I'd do it in a heartbeat even if it means going in at E-1!!!
