If assigned to 19th Group in Texas, is there any way of knowing which foreign language I would be assigned during language phase of the Q?

You get to pick in NGSF units... you will have options, but odds are you can declare Spanish as your desired language and 5/19 will designate that as your language if/when you are selected at SFAS.

Talk with the unit. Each unit will have a few languages that they are assigned. I was 19th in OH, and got to pick between French, Russian, or Arabic. I chose French since it was a shorter language (4 months versus 6), I had taken some French classes in HS, and I figured it had a higher retention factor (same alphabet and plenty of Latin influences in English). After multiple collegiate German courses, my français is still much better after only 4 months at SOFLTC (16 years ago). I recommend a language that you’ll be able to remember and stay proficient. Until recent language initiatives in recent years, I remember several Arabic or Russian speakers that couldn’t order a salad in a restaurant in their target language after 6 months out of the Q. French, Spanish, and German don’t carry the same Foreign Language Pro Pay (FLPP) but you probably won’t dread your next Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Good Luck!

Thanks for the intel. I’m born and raised on south Texas, so I can speak Spanish pretty well. Seeking to see if I can just take a test to see if I can skip Language Phase all together if i price efficiency

You will just need to pass the DLPT. Not sure the “test out” standard now. Back in ‘02, you had to get at least a 2/2 to be waived the SOFLTC, but to pass the course you needed 0+/0+. (Of course this was less than a year after 9-11). “Zero plus, Zero plus, get your ruck, get on the bus.” Last I heard, you need a 1/1 to graduate. 2/2 and above to get FLPP. It changes often though.

That’s what I’m actually seeking to know. If I can pick and just test out in Spanish in order to skip Language phase all together.

Have you taken the Spanish DLAB? It may be harder then you think. If you don’t practice for it you might not do as well as they want. Speaking from experience as a person that is English as a second language. Also CLEPed out 12 credits. But like others said. Find out what languages the are assigned. 19th group in Draper have many languages but it’s cause so many of them are former Moron missionaries.
