It is difficult to pick just one, but I will go with Joshua Chamberlain.
Chamberlain was a professor of Rhetoric when he volunteered for duty with the 53rd Maine in 1862. He was offered a full Colonelcy but knew he didn't have the knowledge and training so he accepted Lt Col. He saved the day at Little Round Top at Gettysburg, winning the Medal of Honor in the process. He was at Petersburg and finally, was the officer approached to tell General Grant that General Lee requested a discussion on the terms of surrender. He knew enough about the situation to call his troops to attention and render honors when Confederate General Gordon's surrendering troops marched past, catching Gordon off guard and providing a bit of morality to a demoralized group. He went on to be elected Governor of Maine. After being Governor, he was placed in charge of the state militia and called them to put down a group of armed men who had taken over the capital because they didn't agree with the election results in 1880. He stayed at the capital and in harms way until it was resolved.

If was given the opportunity to encounter anyone person in history. It would be my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With tears in my eyes, I would thank Jesus for his grace, mercy and forgiveness of my sins. Then I would be silent and listen to his voice of reason and truth.

I would want to meet Jesus. He is the most influential person who ever existed. He inspired and changed the world. Transformed lives, cultures, philosophy, art, architecture, everything.

WWII shipyard inspector, who inspired so many during the war. He inspected ships then left an inspection signature “Kilroy was here” marked in various locations of the ship. Servicemen everywhere began seeing the signature.
“Kilroy was here” soon became a popular message to leave at various destinations. Before long, Kilroy’s mark had been noted throughout Europe and in the South Pacific.
Some believe that “Kilroy was here” was a morale-builder as well. It seemed to give strength to the G.I.’s when they arrived at a new location and discovered that American soldiers already had been through the area.
Written in places as varied as Mount Everest and the Arc de Triomphe. It is occasionally still written in random places today. I have even written that, did you see it in Iraq?
