I don't hunt any longer since I got out of the military but I still enjoy watching a dog do what they are bred to do. Here I have a photo of one of my two golden retrievers retrieving a duck in the field. This dog is really smart, lots of obedience titles and my wife is working on her hunting titles. Our other golden has a few obedience titles and we are working on some field titles.

Grew up with GSPs and my father trained off and on about 9 months a year. His last few dogs were "college educated" and train about 6 months on and off. His current GSP is spoiled rotten and loves earning her keep on grouse and pheasant. I really think it comes down to the dog and type of training. It pretty much all sticks once trained, its enduring they respond, repeatedly, that your after. I'd imagine if your competing year round would be best.

My wife swore up and down for the last 10 years we would not get another dog. She mostly ignores our lab because she is allergic. This last Saturday, at her behest, we bought our first GSP. 9 weeks old and I hope to have him ready for hunting in Sep or Oct this year. He and are have some hard work ahead of us.

Good luck with yours. Nothing better than watching a dog work. They are beyond happy in there element.

Yeah, I love watching the dogs work. It is sheer joy to us to see they doing what they were bred for. Best of luck to your newest member of your family!

I have a French Brittany, a pointing breed, and I give him a break fro about 6 months, pick it up again at a slow but steady pace in August. It works for us.

Whatever work! It takes patience and dedication to get a dog trained to be a good field pup. Keep at it 1SG Steven Imerman.

She doesn't hunt - she just loves training dogs. We are working on field titles for Junior and Senior Hunter. I suspect Master Hunter may be out of our range in the near future.
These are AKC sanctioned events.

We also have in the past earned "Working Certificates" for dogs we had in the past that have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Working Certificate and Working Certificate Excellence are not AKC recognized titles. Several breeds use this, Golden Retriever Club of America, Flat Coat Retriever Club are two that I know of. I am sure there are others.

Personally I grew up hunting pheasant, waterfowl, squirrel and deer. We ate what we killed. After my military service I tried hunting but just couldn't really do it any longer.

My taxidermy hobby entails me picking up road kill mostly, however I do purchase skins and critters sometimes.

Cpl Vic Burk Sounds like you enjoy Avery rewarding hobby. With a lot of work!

When we visited a zoo operation in Tasmania to see their Tasmanian Devils, the keepers threw a frozen ‘road kill’ into their pen. Five minutes later, a few small pieces of fur were left! Males are only tolerated during mating season, otherwise the females would eat them.
