As with everything unit MTOE's dictate a lot, grades in those positions dictate what the needs of the Army is in relationship to grade. A lot of people forget a major shift in an MTOE Army wide say a Section Sgt for a given type of Unit, from E-5 to E-6 creates an increase demand for E-6's abut a decrease in the amount of E-5's.

To clarify, I just got picked up for SSG in May after chasing points for what seems like forever. After reviewing HRC's past centralized promotion board MOIs the average secondary zone of consideration for SFC is two years TIG. Even though I have over a year before my first look I want to ensure I'm fully ready. I've reviewed my records and corrected any deficiencies/missing documents. However, AR 600-8-19 is fairly vague when it comes to sequence numbers.
If I understand everything correctly you get three looks for SFC which means my final look will be in FY21. My current E6 RCP is Oct '23. In a worst case scenario I don't get selected until my final look. This only gives me approximately 18 months for my sequence# to pop before I hit my RCP. If this worst case occurs while I be able to be retained until my sequence# hits or will I be forced out at my current RCP?

There isn't any reg that gives you a solid number of looks. However, if you review past promotion records you'll notice that you have three chances. Your first look is the secondary zone, which by most MOIs is 12 months TIG. Your second look is in the zone, 24 months TIG. Your final look is 36 months TIG. Historically speaking those that didn't make it by the the third look had a dramatic decrease in gaining selection in additional years. I've summarized this as board members scrutinizing these records more closely with a thought process of "if future boards didn't approve why should we?"
Theoretically, you have an indefinite number of looks as long as the current FY MOI provides you as an eligible candidate.

Also remember the 3 looks and out was during a time when we were mandated by Congress to draw down our numbers. Now that this is no longer, I wouldn't worry about the 3 looks and out. You should have nothing to worry about. Stay the course, give back to the Army and lead your troops. Do those things and you will get selected to SFC.

Yes if you don't make it in 18 months you will be RCP. Sequence is by DOR. So you will make most likey at 9 month or less. Just step up.

SSG (Join to see) that's completely incorrect. Your analysis is way off.
There is no limit to the number of looks, you are either eligible according to that board MILPER or you are not. You don't have to worry about RCP prior to pinning because you simply won't be authorized to compete once you're past a certain TIS/TIG.
As to sequence number, your number is lower based on who has the most TIS/TIG.
