In the 1980s, could someone right out of boot camp become a Drill Sergeant in the Army? Had a guy claim to me he went from boot camp to DS?

Yes. I had one. He was a Korean veteran. Got out for several yrs, came back in and had to go thru basic again. After graduation he returned to his Sgt rank, went to DS,

I was ATTACHED TO an airborne unit. I wore the puking chicken, but I was NEVER airborne qualified. I was an 88M ATTACHED TO the badasses
No they did not, they did however have drill Corporals. The drill Corporal had administrative and other roles not aligned with drilling troops. They did however, by virtue of being active duty Junior NCO warrant respect when dealing with trainees, nothing more. It would be tantamount to a trainee seeing an NCO at the PX while on pass and rendering respect by going to Parade rest etc. when speaking to the NCO.

They would have, At the least had to go through DI training. The only person that could be a DI after basic would be someone who reupped after being out for a bit.
