In this age of teleconferences, are national conventions really necessary?

Considering the the amounts that will be spent for the party for these Parties, couldn't the money be better spent somewhere else? I understand it's a private organization but seems like a huge waste of time and resources. Or is all the pomp and ceremony really something?
Note: I admit my bias as I hate pomp and ceremony.

Active face to face meeting builds camaraderie, and unity within the group. No other way works as well.

Everyone knows the deals get done after work or on breaks. This used to be the smoking deck, but now that few smoke they need more time to eat and drink after and before the next talk.

A teleconference is for a short duration meeting not a national level event. Semper Fi.
