In today's modern military, would there be any benefit to an enlisted structure similar to that of the past?

I believe that most, if not all of us, are familiar with the old army enlisted rank structure where one could go their entire career without ever becoming an NCO, but still make it up through the paygrades. We all have known people who were great at their jobs but not fit to lead. Is there any benefit to bringing back such an enlisted rank structure?

I say bring it back, but not all he way up to E-9...stop at 7. I would’ve preferred to have been a Spec-5 as opposed to a Sergeant. Don’t grt me wrong, the hard stripes are nice, but my skill set is better suited to Spec ranks.

Specialist rank had it's place, but only in certain fields.. cooks, medical, electronics repair, truck drivers...etc.. can't see a SPC9 maybe up to a SPC7 and then they either go warrant or bottom out...knew many that were just happy just doing their job and didn't have to mess with all the leadership stuff. but SPC5 and above pulled CQ and staff duty etc....

Well. Yea some people don’t want to lead. Just Specialze in a certain Area or JOB.

I think so, it would separate those in charge from those that work. And if a worker was in charge you'd know it because the rank would be the same. It's the difference between 1sg, and MSG.

I have always said they should have never gotten rid of the specialist ranks! It never made sense. Not everyone is Audie Murphy and making them hold a rank they are not ready for or even want, is setting them up for failure!

It should not take away from present leadership promotions but build an interior work force .mai.tain the leadership pro.otions but give the others a chance to advance as well.

No, No, No... none of this E4/E5 and above, but can't lead BS !!! Every other branch , you are expected to start being a leader at the E4 level. If you can't do so , I say it's time to get out.

A few people have stated the same but then why doesn't the army follow that rule? How do we end up with NCOs who are yes-men rather than those strong enough to stand up for their soldiers, those who indulge the crackpot officer ideas planted by the good idea fairy, and the SSGs who undoubtably never make E7 but rather will sit in their slot until retirement because they aren't up to snuff for promotion? These same people, who understand that they are subpar, will go so far as to keep down high speed low drag newcomers for fear of showcasing their ineptitude. You have to walk the walk if you're gna talk the talk. Be a leader or out? There are long lists of NCOs who should be shown the door then.

SGT. G, I was one of those once upon a time because of personal stuff getting in the way. But once I got out of my own way put my familys and others needs 1st, I got a diffrent perspective and made myself a better soilder.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - I think you bring up a good point but I think those are institutional problems that the Army needs to address and fix.
