In your opinion, what is the most common violation of uniform regulations, and are you guilty of it from time to time?

Mine was wearing a multi purpose tool on my belt for years when you were not supposed to. Being the crazy mechanic always helped.

I don’t know if you’re talking about the BDU days but current 670-1 allows it as long as it doesn’t extend past the lower part of the top. (Same with keys on the belt)

Hands in pockets.
I rarely make on the spot corrections. I sometimes do it myself. Many in my chain of command do it; I have seen a General do it. It is so unconscious a gesture I don't think many of us even realize it. It doesn't help that as uniform regs go, a lot of people up and down the rank ladder see that "hands in pockets" rule as one of mindless nitpickery.

When I was coming up as young Soldier all the way through my PLDC SGL days, we didn't put hands in our pockets. When I was a Platoon SGT, I noticed myself and people around me, mainly senior NCO's and Officers having hands in the pocket without many corrections. It became a habit that I didn't correct until I was forced to going through Warrant Officer Candidate School. Since then, its been hit or miss with me. I wont blatantly stick my hands in my pockets now but every now and again I will catch myself doing it.

I agree. I think hands in pocket is a little bit too nitpicky if walking individually. However, in a formation I could see it being a bigger deal.

I would have to go along with most others and say hands in pockets but over the years Ive gotten used to grabbing my belt and holding on to it to keep my self from putting my hands in my pocket.

The hands in the pocket is a tough cookie to crack, especially when it seems to be socially and professionally acceptable in my many areas.

Ah man, this is a big one that many people of all ranks violate on a daily basis. I'm not going to lie, when driving in my truck, I wear a few pairs of sunglasses that are definitely not authorized but never walking around in uniform.

I think walking and talking on the phone is one I see a lot and drinking while walking too as well. I'm guilty of both since I work on the flightline and whether I need to call super or whoever. But outside of the flightline I wouldn't do it.

Damn, even the Air Force is more strict than the Navy! The Navy now actually allows walking and talking on your phone.

Yeah they frown upon it.. I usually don't see it with other airman but with other branches.PO1 John Miller -

Also too with the drinking while walking, some post policies do allow you to drink water while walking

By all means, hands in the pocket. That use to drive me nuts.
On the backside, I couldn't keep my cover on while in the MP to save my life. If I wore it and went into a vehicle I always slammed my head.
See my profile picture, yes, I am supposed to be wearing my black cover, I still do it to this day.

CW4 (Join to see) Chief walking and talking on the cell phone. I always tell them no walking and talking in uniform. Also no pen, it's part of your uniform. Being a Cook, we have to do head count, and the number of soldiers that don't have a pen on them is crazy. But I ask them you have your phone on you right? They always say yes. So I ask why no pen? Drives me crazy. Or no rank on PC.

CW4 (Join to see) Chief, I myself am guilty from time to time of hands in pockets, sunglasses on top of my head, sometimes not having my back pockets not buttoned up.

At least your honest. Pockets and buttons are hard habits to break. As for the sun glasses, I've never worn them on my head but I wear unauthorized glasses while driving in uniform.

CW4 (Join to see) Hell while driving??? No one is going to say anything about that. I have seen a lot of soldiers wear sunglasses in uniform that are to say are borderline too fashion if that is how you want to say it. But yeah and other thing I have problems with is damn little strands of thread everywhere on the uniform that you either burn off or clip off. I have problems with that. Seems they always come out of nowhere....lol
