I was given to understand that if there is a supervisor in between an officer's Rater and Senior Rater, by regs, that person can be placed as an intermediate rater.

I'm a CW3, and my rater, for lack of a fill-in for the 26B slot (former 53A) is the MAJ who is our deputy Commander, while my senior rater is the commander (LTC).

We have a now-WO1 double-slotted with me, and so my rater (the MAJ) becomes his senior rater. The problem is that we're getting a non-promotable CPT in the 26B (former 53A) slot, and when we do, HE becomes my rater. I believe the LTC is still my senior rater.

All WOs must have a MAJ as the senior rater, however, so my WO1 will be rated by me (per the LTC), and then senior rated by the Commander, because we HAVE to skip the CPT, as he's not promotable..

Would we then be able to put the CPT in as the intermediate rater? Is that how it works?

J.D., good question. Sorry I do not have an answer for you on that, it does seem to make since though. It is also unnecessary; I have only had an intermediate rater twice and that was a long time ago. Quite frankly, when it comes time for a board the person reviewing your file does not have a lot of time to go over your entire OER. Generally speaking, they are going to concentrate on your senior raters comments as they carry the most weight. Typically, those will amplify what your rater and intermediate rater (if you have one) have to say. Additionally, I do not like the percentage being used by the senior rater (top 5%), I believe there is more power in this officer is rated 2 of 8 or something to that extent. Just my two cents, hope it helps even though I didn’t answer your question.

Oh, I'm not going to have an intermediate rater, my WO1 would. We're double-slotted in the one CW3 255A slot, and the commander (LTC) asked me to be his rater.

I get it, as a WO1 that is when I had an intermediate rater. As you recall after two years he will be a W2 (assuming he doesn't mess up) and by the time he is getting ready for W3 they won't look at those old OERs anyway. Good luck.
