i didn't make commandant or any honors in alc. However, that don't bother me. I am curious I got superior on my 1059. Is that the normal thing for a ncoes? Or is that good?

BLUF: Superior is excellent.
SGT, earning a superior without achieving a spot on the Commandant's List or honors is typical. Each of those have separate requirements. For example, the NCO Academy where I am a Senior SGL requires five superiors, the highest GPA (must be about 90%), and no negative counseling statements to be the DG. Four superiors (one must be leadership), the second highest GPA (must be above 85%), and no negative counseling statements to be the HG. The Commandant's list is the top 20% of the class in regards to GPA (must be above 85%) and requires three superiors with no negative counseling statements. The DG and HG will be on the Commandant's List, but Soldiers on the Commandant's list do not have to be the DG and HG. The rating you earn in block 12 (superior) is based off of your performance. Here, we have several Performance Evaluation Checklists (PRT, D&C, Inspections, AAR, Info. Briefs, Written Assessment) that the SGLs use to evaluate the students. Each of these results in a score. If the student's scores are high enough, the student qualifies to receive a superior. All of this should have been explained in your in-brief to the NCO Academy you attended.

I also never received a negative I don't care about honors or commandant. It was a simple question as far as superior rating

That's a good mark for sure. If it's related to Academics, you may have been in the top 10%. That's usually considered the Commandant's List (think Honor Roll/Dean's List), Honor Graduate typically has the highest academic average. Otherwise, I would assume it relates to all of your hands on assessments.

Msg, I didn't make commandant or honor grad. I was a decimal off. So I didn't make top 10 percent. Which was only two NCOs.

SFC (Join to see) - Perhaps they awarded that rating because they were splitting hairs on the math. Take 1SG (Join to see)'s advice and run with it. To answer your other question, the 1059 is a substantiating document for your NCOER. The NCOER will come into play for promotion (typically the last 3 - 5).

That's above the standard and should be accompanied by supporting bullets. Distinguished, honor grad, and top 5% should be noted separately.

AR 623-3, Ch 4.
It means you demonstrated performance in that ability that was significantly above the standard.
Exceeded course standards (DHG/HG) overall course achievement is significantly above the standards of the course.
Maybe it's not what your post meant, but you should be bothered a bit that you weren't an Honor Graduate. Promotions aren't going to get easier.

1SG, I appreciate your comment. Mainly my question is in Slc I got superiors on my 1059. Wasn’t commandant or higher. I am not worried. I made the list. I am not good at schools never have been just do my very best. I have a pretty good resume for promotion. I am now thinking about going officer. I am 5 classes from my bachelors and made the 7 list. I was just curious but I found out why. It was a small class and 97.9 wasn’t the highest and only one honor could be selected and the 98 was the chosen one

Nothing wrong with a Superior rating. The comments must support the rating though.

Yes a superior rating denotes top 5% of class and should be included on ncoer in the training section.

That would be a normal thing.in order to get Exceed Course Standards you will have to get Superior on the right side #12 of your 1059 which would make it quite a difference

Remember, ALC is a Leadership Course. Instructors are observing students on their leadership abilities on and off duty. Most of the work in the classroom are team oriented so it's not uncommon for half of the class to get multiple Superior ratings. Ultimately, it's up to Instructors to make the call and it's very tough! I've taught ALC many times and soldiers are so competitive that trying to get it right is very, very tough! You did well, young Soldier! Repeat and stay motivated for SLC.

Yes that is normal. Only the top 20% can exceed, but if your scores were over 90% in the category's of written, oral, leadership etc you get a superior. And yes it is good

its very funny you mention that I received superior in 3 sections, oral comm, group work and research and somhow stil lgot and acheived course standards. I guess I didn't have a chance to gain superior in leasdership , which I guess I still should have because of the instructors last minute changes to traininig exercises and still accomplished without any 'notional' casualties, , but as I am close to retirement I looked at the bigger picture of my career and for young NCOs use it to improve fo ryour next NCOES so there can be no debate on validating and recognizing your superior performance.

Ssg sanders first let me go ahead and congratulate you for your achievement of retiring from the military. That being said, I received superiors in all rating except research which was "x" with not evaluated. I'm a little confused on your comment. As far as what I posted. No matter, thank you for your response and good luck in your future endeavors

SSG,
Exceeded course standards is typically reserved to 20% of the class. I assume the Total Soldier Concept (or similar) had not been implemented at your academy yet. The old system was based on GPA - whoever had the highest GPA received exceeded course standards. I have sent NCOs with all five superiors home with an achieved course standards 1059 while another NCO, who only had one or two superiors, received exceeded course standards because he had a higher GPA. The new system has fixed this issue - see my other post in this forum for details.
