My brother has gotten out, and we are putting together a shadow box for him. We would like to get his medals engraved with his name, rank at the time of the award, the date they were awarded, and if there's room the operation in which he received them.

I've tried doing some research but can't find anyone thus far that has experience in engraving medals, we're considering a jeweler but any advice would be welcome.

Attached is an unfinished design concept for the shadow box we're building.

UPDATE

AR 600-8-22
1–34.Engraving of awards, the grade, name, and organization of the awardee are engraved on the reverse of the MOH. The name only of the awardee is engraved on the reverse of every other decoration, the POW Medal and the AGCM. When possible, engraving will be accomplished prior to presentation. When this is impracticable, awardees will be informed that they may mail the decoration, including the POW Medal or AGCM to Commander, U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, Clothing and Heraldry Product Support Integration Directorate, Post Office Box 57997, Philadelphia, PA 19111–7997, for engraving at Government expense.

Also, keep in mind, if you’re engraving then medals in the shadow box, the engraving won’t show. They will be permanently mounted to the backing. Might be unnecessary to engrave at all.

Fair enough! I do think any trophy shop will be able to hook you up if the VFW doesn’t have a good contact. Thank you bothe for your service.

SPC (Join to see) recommend your brother makes a diagram of which awards are which and writes a narrative on his experience about each and puts that in an envelope with a copy of his 214s/NG22. This will allow the children/ grandchildren can understand the story and link between the decorations and the man

My granddaughter found my stuff in a box when she was 9 yrs old and put together this display frame. I wouldn't ever change a thing and she knows it's hers when i'm gone. Getting the kids involved is definitely a good thing.

Once they are in there you won't see any engraving. I've thought about getting my PH engraved but haven't done it yet.

We thought about that, but we figured if the case breaks down the road or the kids/grand-kids open it for some reason they might see it then. We're also thinking about storing copies of the award orders and a letter in the back of the board. We all know what he did and what it means now, but in a couple generations who knows.

The PH comes engraved with your name, but the room left to try and put rank, date and operation name would probably result in lettering so small a magnifying glass would be needed to read it.

find reputable trophy shop give them only exactly what you want on them nothing more like name rank and when it was awarded. trophy shops have the right equipment to do what your asking for. I my ARCOM I got in Iraq and had the same thing done, it doesn't cost much and it looks nice, I was told come back in few days the guy call a few hours later but I had only one and it looks fantastic. depending how much work they have and how big of and operation it is it could take maybe a week.
