I'm coming up on my 18 months TIG from 2LT - 1LT. One of my bestfriends went through OCS at Benning with me and he will be getting promoted sometime during FEB to 1LT...when he asked me whether I would be I told him "No because I haven't been to BOLC".

He was surprised that I wasn't getting promoted; so here are my questions:
- Do I need BOLC to get promoted to 1LT? I thought that was correct...
- I've heard of other NG LT's that got promoted before BOLC...how does that work?

I've gotten so many mixed answers from my Training / Readiness NCO, Commander, fellow officers.

Can someone please explain this to me?

I have not been to BOLC (Going to QM BOLC in April!)

When I was a cadet in the Oregon Guard I knew one 2LT who was told he couldn't be promoted without bolc and a 1LT who had been promoted without bolc. Imagine the formers frustration. They were both in the same company too. He just got out as a 1LT with about 3 years tig and 5 years as an LT total.

Yeah I feel like there is a missing link here that is unique to the NG. I would be beyond disappointed if I spent my entire initial enlistment as a LT!

I caution people about reading too much into these I-knew-a-guy-once anecdotes. There's usually more to the story that is not apparent to outsiders.

Then again, sometimes S1 people just make errors and oversights.

I agree sir, certainly one story is more likely to make an exception than a rule, but it is funny to say the least.

So you do need BOLC for promotion except for ECP. Part of this comes from the fedrec process. When you commission into the ARNG, a temporary fedrec is given within your current branch. When you put in your fedrec packet for 1LT, they verify that you are branch qualified so that you can be fedrec'ed as this is big army's way of tracking which MOS/AOC you've taken up.

Have you read the officer promotion regs ?

That is the easiest way to find out also check with your state and see if they have a state regulation regarding it

Knowledge is power

Also sorry I can't give you the specific regulation number but this whole retirement piece made me dump most of that instant resource info

Roger that! I looked through AR 135–155 and it does spell out the need for BOLC with a few exceptions that I don't fit into. My next step will be talking to the OPM in NH to see if there is a reg that addresses it.

This seems like something you should have been made aware of in ROTC.

I received my commissioning from OCS not ROTC. The cadre at OCS didn't have a lot of hands on info for promotions for NG soldiers as all of them were AD. I'm in the NG which seems to make things more convoluted then our AD brothers / sisters.

It depends on your state and commissioning source. I personally am an ECP 1LT that graduated and commissioned from a Military Junior College. We are required to promote after 24 months. I know the Georgia guard doesn't follow this.

That does answer the reason why some folks show up to BOLC as a 1st LT. However I've heard through the rumor mill that your COC has the option of promoting you if you've meet your TIG / Scheduled for BOLC...but that's the rumor mill talking..not the regs!

It also depends on when they can get a slot for BOLC.

Trust me, as someone who waited until the last minute to do BOLC...I spent 18 months as a PL before going to BOLC and thought I was the shit. I wasn't. BOLC is incredibly useful. And hold on to that gold bar as long as you can. That's your fuck up umbrella. So long as you don't get anyone killed, that gold bar covers all manner of sins and lets you make the fuck ups you need to make to become a good officer. Don't rush lines onto your face.

If graduation form BOLC is not required for promotion to 1LT then it should be 1LT (Join to see). BOLC is more than a rite of passage.

I completely agree sir! I'd rather earn the rank then simply pin it on as a result "checking the box". Promotion to 1LT is automatic after 18 months TIG unless your a screw-up...which I am not! But again...I thought BOLC was required.
