I think the real problem might be that the military still does not want to do this mission. They all claim to be itching to go and fight but it's another small war and counterinsurgency operation. We have seen the military's reluctance over the past 13-14 years to do what is truly needed to fight these wars. They want tanks, and strategic bombers, and big ships, and those don't fit into these small wars. Even more so as these wars are ending (and restarting in this case) the services have been transitioning back to a Cold War-esque footing. Personally, as it stands, I hope Congress maintains the status quo because otherwise it seems we will just draw ourselves into another dozen years fighting in the sandbox because our military doesn't want to do the mission right.

I expect them to do what they usually do, hem and haw about things but do nothing to improve the situation, so Status Quo it is.

Well .. remember .. Iraq was supposed to pay for itself!
"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy Paul Wolfowitz suggested the war could be done on the cheap and that it would largely pay for itself."

I think they are slowly turning to realize the threat, however, the atmosphere in Congress changes every 2 years. Not only that, but the POTUS needs to recognize the threat, too. It does no good if Congress recognizes the threat, but the CIC still thinks of them marginally.

My question is, is Congress going to raise the taxes necessary to fund a continuing war effort in that sand pile or are we just going to borrow the money from China.

i think that before they raise taxes again, or borrow more money, they should find where cuts can be made to unnecessary programs.

But that's as likely to happen as a unicorn flying out of my butt.

Chart
So .. hang that pie-chart on the wall and toss a dart?
Pensions, Healthcare (Medicare) and Defense cover 75% of the real estate.

I think you need to look at the numbers more specifically than a general pie chart shows. How much money is going to countries that are not friendly? How much is going to grants to companies that are not viable? How much is going to grants to study useless things? How much is being sunk into a new toy the DoD wants that has become a 10 year quagmire (F-35)?

Granted, pay for some officials needs to be cut, as well as exorbitant pensions. There are other ways to find the money other than just raising taxes. It is getting to the point where almost 1/2 the country isn't paying taxes anyways. Once it actually gets to 50%, the country fails because it has no money coming it. People are tired of taxes going up w/ little to no showing for why.

Who knows...I still think that the region is going to take an international effort to do anything though.
