Is it appropriate to ask vets & those in Guard/Reserves to stand up to be acknowledged when teaching a class on vet recruitment?

Ask yes, push, chastise "overly encourage" No
And of course no negative ramifications for those that choose not to stand, no gifts or actual physical reward for standing other than acknowledgment

Great. Thank you. BTW, I agree. They are all adults. They DON"T need me to scold them. ;)

Is the class specifically targeted towards vets? As in, are the majority of the people attending this class going to be veterans? If so, it may seem a bit redundant, as they would be acknowledging themselves. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the target group of the class?

No. This is a class for HR pros and the business community on how to do a better job of recruiting veterans.

Vikki Nicometo - Roger that. In that case, I would say it is a good thing to ask them if they would stand to be recognized. This can also open doors for you as far as questions to pose to the class; such as if being a vet is something that they (as vets themselves) look for, or if it influences them at all either positively or negatively (being more harshly critical of the vet, or allowing a bit of a "pass" to one that is a vet).

Public recognition is that ONE thing that military pay and per diem does not and will never cover. It's that one intangible that says this person, these people have put it all on the line for us. And they had no idea whom most of us were, but still they stood up and served without question. Yes, it is appropriate, always has been and always will be.
