Is it possible to apply for Federal OCS when you're already slated to go through State OCS? If so, how would you go about that process?

I start Pre-OCS next month but I don't really want to have to go through a year and a half of traditional State OCS if I can avoid it. I'd rather go through the Federal Option if it is even an option. My state NC act like it's impossible to get into though and I've heard they don't want to allow anyone to go accelerated.

Are you planning to stay in the NG? If so, I would say it’s not likely you will go to Federal OCS. If you would rather go active, you could probably get out of your State program and apply for Federal. Best thing to do is call your recruiter.

Honestly there are assignments in big army that are appealing to me; I don't want to be limited in what I can do because of my commissioning source.

SPC (Join to see) if you go NG State OCS, you are limiting yourself to NG in that state. If you go federal and go active duty for a few years, you can transfer back to NG or Reserves if you want to. I would talk to a Active Duty recruiter, if I were you. He can at least get the paperwork started for you to apply to Fed ocs

LTC (Join to see) - I'll check into it, there's alot to consider though. I just bought my home here in my hometown, but I could always rent it out for a couple of years. My biggest thing is my daughter; being a single dad, I'm terrified at the prospect of not being able to be in her life due to the needs of the army.

SPC (Join to see) You won’t be limited from transitioning into the Active component just because you went through State OCS. Every state OCS candidates packet goes through the Dept of the Army and gets signed off on before they commission you. Same thing happens when you get a promotion, it’s called a federal recognition board. It ensures that the Army recognizes your proposition because technically it is the state promoting you, not the Dept of the Army. So if you commission in the Guard, you can transition into Active duty. But remember that it’s all needs of the Army and depending on what branch you get through your state you may be stuck with that in active service as well.
