I’m really trying to switch from Active to National guard. Is this possible? I’d like to talk to a career counselor or a recruiter or someone who actually knows the process and has seen it before.

No, it is not possible to "switch" from Active Duty to National Guard.
If you have already reported to Active Duty, your options to get to the Guard are:
1. finish your contract and contract to the Guard, or
2. request a hardship discharge to get out early, and possibly get a RE code that requires a waiver to contract to the Guard.

No, you can contract to the NG six months from ETS. Your contract starts the day after you ETS. You can ask a Recruiter and they may give you a 368 Conditional Release, but that means they are a cherry recruiter and don't know what they are talking about.

I doubt very much that you would get a conditional release signed by your command.

I love my job but I can’t handle being away from home like this.

PV2 (Join to see) ok. And what will happen when you join the Guard and you get deployed? Or have a 3 week field exercise? I can't tell you how to be, but keep this in mind:. This time is your time. This time is for you to prove to yourself that you can hack it. Prove others wrong. Prove to yourself you're tough enough. Feelings of homesick is normal. Given enough time, these homesick feelings fade more and more.

PV2 (Join to see) - Being in the Guard and/or reserves doesn't guarantee you won't be away on deployment or training. Being away is part of the job.

You can ask but it isn't a guaranteed process. You are still obligated to meet your prior commitment. But there is a process and you never know if you don't try. But you need to speak tp your career counselor.
