After the shooting in Florida many people began to say arm the teachers. But they over look that a police officer was there. As a Marine I understand how difficult it is to close on and take an active shooter even with the best training and equipment. During the Dallas shooting 11 police officers was injured and another 6 was killed. Out of all the return fire none actually hit the suspect. Infact the suspect was killed by a remote control robot carrying an explosive. The reason why the suspect wasn't killed by a well aimed handgun shot is because of what we call the fog of war. When the shooting starts panic and confusion set in and the way we deal with it in the military is continually to train for those situations week in and week out. But without a third of the training people are expecting teachers to be able to identify the location of the shooter, know the movement of other armed teachers, know the movement of the innocent students and staff, close on the shooter and fire a well aimed shot without putting any students in further danger. Is that realistic?

It gives the students and teachers a hell of a lot better chance to be armed than to not be regardless of what they are up against....

Yes, depending on the training you've had, and the weapon of choice you are carrying. However if they are x military and trained in combat tactics the advantage goes to the rifleman!

Realistic? Depends on how much practice they have at the range. Also how effective they are under stress. Also depends on if they can get a clean shot with no kid or teacher behind a gunman. Also, if the back drop is brick vs. sheet rock. I would rather schools invest in heavy duty classroom doors that can't be easily penetrated or knocked down, but I don't see school having the money in this day and age for $4,500+ doors in every classroom. So, when it comes down to it, it is better to have something than nothing to protect yourself and kids if a madman gets into your school.

Here's my simplistic answer: If a shooter came into my home with an AR-15, I'd rather have my pistol on me than locked away in the gun safe. But still, I'd be terrified.

As to in a school, Any chance of taking the shooter out by an armed teacher is still a chance.

Myth one: AR15s are THE weapon used in school shootings. They are not. Two examples are Virginia Tech, the worst school shooting, used handguns; and the most resent in New Mexico where a shot gun was used.

I don't think arming teachers is way to protect our kids. I think teachers would hesitate before pulling the trigger on a student. I would prefer we develop a professional trained force to protect our kids and schools. BTW - what happened to hardening the schools?

How much training is needed to seek cover behind a desk barricaded within a locked classroom and maybe, MAYBE, fire a round though the door when an active shooter tries to kick down the door?

I'm not looking to turn a teacher into a SWAT team member. I'd simply like to give a qualified teacher a tool to defend the door. The teacher still follows the basic principle of "Run, Hide, Fight" but instead of employing improvised weapons in the "fight" when confronted by a shooter gaining access to the room, a qualified teacher may be authorized to carry a firearm in defense of students and self.

Remember too that teachers include prior active duty veterans, current military reservists, current reserve police officers, reserve deputies, trained police auxiliary members, trained sheriff's posse members. (Some of my HS coaches and college instructors were full time police officers moonlighting as coaches/instructors.) There are also firearm enthusiasts, experienced hunters, and personal defense instructors included in the population of people that happen to work at schools. My wife is college instructor with years of Krav Maga and trigger time long before the university hired her.

Who said or made the decision that they would only be armed with a hand gun. In Israel school teachers carry Uzzies.

I'm confident that a teacher armed with a pistol is more effective against an active shooter with an AR-15 than a teacher armed with a stapler...
