So my husband is trying to re-in list. He was almost through the process until a consult with the doctor at meps. He was honest and said he drinks, not heavily but he does drink on occasion. They denied his waiver because of it. Is it the end of the road? Can he try again in 6 months? What are the next steps if there are any?

I would guess that we are not being told the whole story, and what the various authorities in the process determined about this individual's ability to return to service. Either way, it's the service that sets the standard and it's the recruiter and his leadership that determines if they have the time to pursue another waiver -- given accession goals and workload. I hate to be blunt about this, but the individual may wish to move on, leaving a return to military service behind or try another service.

As a prior recruiter he would need a waiver for a law violation (DUI) or other significant medical issue. The next reason is he DD-214 has an RE code that his unit he mustered out put in it to make sure he was never allowed back into the service. You can get an honorable discharge and with the wrong RE code that most soldiers know nothing about will preclude them from re-entering the service.

I've been in for 14 years now. I was truthful also about my drinking which wasnt much at that time. I was consuming about 4-5 drinks a week. Not much at all. There is zero reason for a waiver needed, unless he said he was drinking 10 drinks a day.

I'm a medic and know most of the things that are the army standard for medical issues. Look up AR 40-501, it's the medical standards and disqualifying issues.

Hope this helps.

There's more to the story than that. Either you don't know the whole story, or you're not telling it.

Drinking is not a disqualification. If he said he’s an alcoholic? That’s a whole ‘nother story.

EDIT- RE CODE IS 3, pattern of misconduct. His write up sheet shows he was late to formation a few times, lost some of his stuff for layout. He was never in trouble for anything alcohol related. Hope this helps.

You wouldn’t get an RE code of 3 for those minor issues. They would have had to be more significant. If that is truly the case which you stated and it better be, I suggest contacting your congressman and they will dig into it. Don’t do a congressional if he is hiding something more major that what is being said in this post. Because it will do more harm than good

A half-stepper has no place in a military unit. It is detrimental to the moral of others he/she must serve with. Think of it as a civilian job also in that he would be fired for non-performance of the job description.

No it is not. There are many ways to get this overturned. To me, this sounds like a very flimsy reason to be denied reenlistment. I will give you some routes, and I suggest you pursue as many as possible. However, has he gotten into any altercations with the civilian or military legal system because of it?? If he has, it will be hard to overcome. Anyway, letters from: chaplins, any counselors, previous evaluations and recent awards, doctors, any family friends of note (lawyers, bankers, elected officials), any senior officers/ NCOs who know him, and if all else fails, federal and state representatives. (Go for your federal house member for help. They have tons of pull)

No, his precious discharge wasn’t anything alcohol related, he hasn’t gotten dui, arrested etc. As far as federal house members, do we have to know them? So from what I understand just get a bunch of reliable/valid people to vouch for him? Thank you for actually answering the question rather than being mean like the other comments.

Mallory Massey - Your federal elected officials are elected to help you, so no you don't have to know them. Helping is supposed to be their job. You also might want to check out a service that didn't make its year end strength goal. The army made it's with like 400 extra people for 2020. It did it, but 400 over is not stellar. Just remember, nasty NCOs like me always expect you to be on time and have all of your shit. Oh, I'm a black boot army NCO. Helping is just our job so no thanks are ever needed. (However a beer will never be turned down) I see changes I don't like since I got out 20 years ago.

There is a appeal process and everyone should pursue it and most time the appeal is the final word .
