I am about to go to AGR recruiting school here in the next couple of months. I am the type of person that like to plan the all important next step. After three years of recruiting, would going warrant still be worth it? Are there Recruiter Warrant officers? Just looking for advice, and yes, before anyone tells me, I know that nothing ever works out the way we plan it.

It is ALWAYS worth it to go Warrant. There is absolutely NO GOOD EXCUSE not to at least put in a packet. I constantly hear people tell me how they would have but they were already an E7 or already had XX years in. Before you weigh the pros and cons of your current job/responsibilities versus what you'd be doing as a Warrant Officer, put a packet together, make the list, then decide if its really want you want to do. If you never submitted a packet, you were never any closer to being a WO than a private fresh out of basic.

Do the packets expire? For example if I was going to put one in now, would it still be good three years from now?

Most of the stuff would not expire. Some things would. LOR from a commander would only work for that commander. Letters from senior warrants might work even after that warrant has PCSd or retired, but you'd probably want to get an additional letter that is more recent after 3 years. I don't remember what all was required for my packet as I did it in 2002. I'm sure some items have changed. A senior ammo warrant will help guide you.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - You would need to update your packet. It does not expire but you will need to update your resume, personal data, letters, physicals, and anything with an old date or dated signature on it. Submitting an old packet will not pass your proponent.

I have twelve years in the Army as enlisted and I recently went Green to Gold. I will commission as a 2LT in May. My advice it to think about your future and if you will be happy in the next 10-20 years if you stay enlisted. Everyone has their own goals and qualities they can bring to different parts of the Army. I would just look to the future and not the past. Good Luck!

I'm not aware of recruiting warrants. However, with an ordnance background, you'd be an ideal candidate for an ordnance warrant position. You should definitely put in the packet.

There are warrants who deal strictly with recruiting, but they are typically farmed out from the existing pool of jobs and are normally CW3 and up. I'm unsure if this is something the OP would want to try for though.

Why do you want to become a Warrant officer?

I would like to be a Warrant Officer, because I believe I am great at what I do, and I believe that my best option to pass along my knowledge as well as progress my career would be to be a Warrant Officer. As a young Soldier I always went to my Warrants with any questions because they knew their trade. My other option when I get my bachelors would be to be a Dietitian (65C), however, I see a downfall in working in a hospital, or an MTC.

You still need the degree as a Warrant Officer to remain competitive for promotion to CW4 and CW5. While I encourage NCOs to consider a career path that includes Warrant Officer service, you need to do it for the right reasons. Many see the WO career path as easier than enlisted or officer, want a pay raise, and do not want to do PT or formations. These are illusions and not the right reasons. You will be at a disadvantage coming off recruiting duty with a three year lapse in your area of expertise. leadership is only a piece of the qualification pile. Certifications, education, and training are great but you must remain current and proficient. You may come off your duty as a SFC. SFCs tend to be more competitive but you can be not qualified, non select because of the recruiter duty. Something to consider. Sit down with a Warrant Officer in your career field and discuss your plans. Remember, as AGR you must give up your active status before you go to WOCS/WOBC. Once you are branch qualified you have to reapply for active status. if you are in a shortage MOS you may get a slot. If not, you will be TPU until a slot becomes available.

What do you want your career I the military to be and look like? Where do you want to be in 5, 10, or 15 years from now? What is your passion? Once you answered those question then you definitely know what it is you want to experience in the military.

CW4 (Join to see) and CPT (Join to see) both provided sound advice. My only question that I have for you is, will 3 years of recruiting put you behind the powercurve as a technical expert in your field? Most Warrant Officer MOS prerequisites want to see your last 5 NCOERS showing your technical and leadership abilities in your MOS and being a recruiter could possible take away from your technical/tactical resume once you put a WOCS packet.

That is an important consideration, however, I would not let it prevent me from submitting a packet. The packet completion is arguably the toughest part about becoming a WO. Once the packet is complete and submitted, let the selection board decide if you deserve it. The worst thing that happens is that they say no twice and you try again a year or two later after you have corrected any deficiencies. If you lack the required technical knowledge, it will be tough to get the letters of recommendations from your senior warrants anyway. Make contact with those senior warrants in the ammo world as soon as you can and they will guide you.

Thats a very good point. I currently am an 89B, so I think as long as I keep up with the certifications, and follow the updates, the storage system and ammo doesn't change all too much. Maybe some updates to systems, but I tend to pick up pretty quickly. My secondard MOS, if I wanted to go that way I believe would be more of a problem. As a 91B, Vehicles are always changing and getting updated.

Go for it. CW4 (Join to see) is right, what's the worst that can happen, not get selected. You will never know if you don't even go for it. I guess I only made my last comment based off of some of the latest 915A W1's that I've seen in action, the quality and technical knowledge isn't where it should be.

Chief,

You're spot on! The only warrant recruiters I know currently are in the NG and they recruit medical as myself

I was a recruiter 2 years before I transitioned to Warrant Officer. It was worth it to me, but that came from my desire to be a Warrant Officer.

However, I did go back to working in my MOS for a year prior to dropping my Warrant packet to re-familiarize myself with the current equipment.

As an AGR solider going recruiting your Primary MOS will be 79R. With that being said USARC will not have a problem with you transferring over to Warrant, however this is what will likely happen:
1. USAREC is always short AGR recruiters and if you submit your 4187 to be released 9/10 it will be disapproved.
2. USARC unwritten rule: they are paying you to recruit...period.
3. You can submit your 4187 no problem but will it get approved. 99% not.

4. Here is another if you are not of your primary now, and three yrs later you're a 79 series...no warrants AGR in recruiting except maybe JAG area. Now you would not have relevant experience in your old MOS any longer.

5. What to know more...find me on global.

Your best bet if you are truly interested in Warrant is to go warrant in the Reserve then come into AGR program as Warrant

6. I know from being an AGR recruiter for last 14yrs

Just tell the truth and don't lie. Recruiting is not as easy as it looks.
