Is it worthwhile to be a member of some of the veterans organizations after retirement (like VFW, etc.)? What has been your experience?

The few American Legions & VFW's I've been in over the years haven't been much more than cheap places to get drunk. I was disappointed and haven't been back in one in many years.

I tried, for me it one was a bar with a glorified group, and everything was full of smoke. The other two while having alcohol available were a group, acted like a group but still seemed wonky for me.

Having said that I have hear great stories about these groups aiding Vets and Service members as they transition etc. so I am not bad mouthing, I just had unfavorable experience.

I recommend it but will say that not all posts are created equal. I have been members of good and bad posts. The mission is great but experiences may vary.
