I am just looking for new/fresh ideas on how to improve logistical support at a Company and Battalion level. I am trying to learn how to leverage outside resources, such as the FSC, other support avenues, and also utilize organic assets to build a stronger logistics and supply identity and performance. 

At my Company, we have a great Supply Sergeant, but we seem to run into some silly issues. I am looking for ways to manage this at a Company leadership level so that I can support him, but also find better ways to plan for our needs and address short-comings that are systemic and not performance based. 

What has worked for you when you have needed to plan and manage the logistics piece of operations?

Lean Six Sigma, Airspeed methods. These approaches to logistical problem solving in the work place are the best. Also these methods are industry standard, and available to the military.

First question I would pose, what does your YTB look like? Does your/commander have the intent to do the same? Have you held a discussion with the BSB commander as he is the senior log guy in that chain? I run into this all the time and falling under a logistics chain of command, I have superiors lack this understanding also. Hope this helps.

- early and accurate determination of requirements.
- Submit an accurate and timely LOG STAT.
- do the routine stuff routinely. Manage document registers, reconcile your SSA account, track/order shortages, ensure property is accounted for and signed down to users, do 10 percents.
- think through were you want to end up, then consider how you will be logistically, then figure out what you need at the last tactical pause to posture you to either continue pursuit/counter attack or defend vigorously past the culminating point.
- have the BSB and FSC give your leaders an OPD on supporting the offense, defense, and security operations. Follow it up with beers at the club. Each maneuver guy must talk to a Loggie. Relationships.
- don't be fixated on stuff+truck+drive=logistics. Aerial delivery, CDS, LCLA, air-land, watercraft, sling loads, internal helicopter loads etc are all awaiting your discovery. Be ready to run a DZ and have DZSO qualified people. Learn how to properly recover air drop.
- NCOs must take the lead, especially in Maintenance. Enforce standards, check PMCS, install operator parts, operators help with services, take care of your stuff and use the TM. If people are equipment dumb, use AMC LARs to train them.
- make your food service section do field feeding. Service your MTRCs.
- Sustainment needs to be on the training calendar. services, inventories, inspections, AOM, etc.
- your supply sergeant is one guy, get him help, even if it is nug level carrying, lifting, cleaning, etc. I imagine you have excess turn ins and PSDs, have the HR holders and their platoons help get crap ready for turn in.
